Power supply not responding after install

I am working on a pc running XP pro that has a bad PS. I took one out of another working pc with same voltage values and installed it. When I plug it in and turn it on, I get not response whatever. I put a multimeter on some of the molex connectors, and no power. The mother board looks ok(no bulges on Capacitors), but the system may have other problems since it has been down several months and I don't know any history. What should I look at next? Thanks in advance.

Re: Power supply not responding after install

Try to minimize the power drain on the power supply. To do this, disconnect every device from the power supply except the cables to the motherboard. Also, be sure to disconnect all IDE, SATA, and floppy cables from the motherboard (since the devices won't work without power they'll cause issues with the system if they are connected via their data cables, such as causing it to stall during post).

On a side note, you may also want to disconnect the case switch from the motherboard just in case the switch is bad. Just use a flat head screwdriver to jumper the 2 pins to turn the system on (you might want to try this first).

Something else to consider is that if the system hasn't been turned on in months it might be worth just letting it sit there for a few minutes with the power plugged into the PSU with it's switch set to ON. The idea is to let the motherboard "warm up" first. Then after a few minutes try turning the PC on with the case switch.
