External HDD
I would like to back up all my important data to an external HDD. But since I had one crash on me, it was an Iomega, I am a bit hesitant. I would just like to take my music, movies and documents with me when I move to New Zealand at the end of the year.
I am thinking about buying a raid 1, but then I don't know if that choice is wise and which brand would be the best. My question is now, could any of you guys advise me as to what brand would be the best choice? Should I buy a casing and a HDD apart from each other or a factory made external HDD? Is a raid 1 external HDD a good choice or a waste of money?

Re: External HDD
Well if you need more security on data storage you would want NAS with RAID 1. That said those solutions are rather costly. The cheapest systems that I've seen in here are over 160€ without the HDD's... But your needs sounds like you would be cheaper off to burn your stuff to double layer DVD's

Re: External HDD
1) Burn your data to DVDs or BlueRay discs.
2) Buy an external drive to get with you for the duration you are at NZ. 3) If you stay in NZ for far more than a while, repeat 1).

Re: External HDD
a Verbatiim 47513 External HDD + some coolers (since these babies tend to heat up and fry) and you're done...

Re: External HDD
burning to dvd's hadn't even crossed my mind, that would be a really good idea.

Re: External HDD
Yeah, it does many DVDs. If you had the time I would recommend you to do what I am going to do soon (I hope). Buy a blue ray recorder and burn your data on blue ray discs. You would need about 10 discs for 500GB HDD, instead of more than a hundred DVDs.

Re: External HDD
There are programs that catalogue your discs, free ones too.
After you burn a disc (or have in the past), just use it to store the details of it in the library. When you want a specific file or whatever, just use the software to locate it. Of course for this to work you need to label in some way your discs.

Re: External HDD
does nobody have any experience with external HDD's?
Which brands are good and which to avoid. Some personal great experience with a particular one.. It would be so much easier..

Re: External HDD
I have experience with external USB drives. From 2001 onwards.
I had bad experience with one (Mybook by WD) where I lost about 80GB of data and returned the drive. One average-bad experience with a Lacie HDD where it died on me, after the warranty was reached. One good experience with an Iomega drive (my first external btw), which still works after 8 years. I don't have it any more, a cousin of mine has it, but he still uses it every day and it is fine. Currently I have 2 external Seagate Freeagent Pro, each 1TB, and they work great for a little over a year now. What I do is avoid WD, avoid Lacie, trust Seagate (for now) and I trust Iomega.

Re: External HDD
I've an old Maxtor that's still running fine. Seeing as they were bought by Seagate though that's not much help......
Seagate does make good drives, so they would be worth looking at for an external

Re: External HDD
a friend of mine bought a Verbatim 1.5TB external HDD... unfortunately, the driver fried after 3 months... the good thing was that he got his RMA the next day (it was a local company that sold him the drive) and that he had very little data lying on it (about 20GB)...
the new drive also overheats, but he learned his lesson... two little CPU coolers from an old PII rig fixed the heating problem... ... so far, it's been running for six months without any issuses... ![]() so, the punchline of the story is: if you're gonna buy something that you know absolutely nothing about, be sure to take extra precautions...

I should pick a WD Passport or something like that. Great brand and the 2.5" size is also nice. My brother has one and it works great. Although they cost a little bit more than a 3,5" (ga anders naar T.net, kan je PW mooi gebruiken voor de prijzen )

Re: External HDD
hmm, I don't like their little storage room. I owned an Iomega external drive (back in the day when a 250gb drive was big
) but it suddenly died on me. Something about the laserhead being out of line or something. There was some weird ticking sound when I turned it on. I guess I'll take a look around on T.net, see what the users experiences are there.. I am just so hesitant to buy 1 large drive. I mean, if I put my whole life in there and it dies on me, that would suck so hard.. Anyway, thanks for thinking with me and giving me advice.
