Blue Ray Recorder thoughts

I am thinking buying an internal BR recorder/drive for my PC. To replace the DVD drive, perhaps SLOWLY starting buying BR movies (like once a 6month period), mostly to rent movies, and to backup a few terrabyte of data.
With the very high cost of discs, I would only get like one double layer disc per month.

Questions.
Are double layer discs and drives available yet? (yes I don't know)
Any suggestions for cheap drive and discs, but also good (yeah I know).

Re: Blue Ray Recorder thoughts

I'll tell you right now, buy the newer LG BH08-LS20 recorder. It's a bit expensive ($230 or so), but it's better than the older CH08-LS10 by $100, quieter. It's also better than most of the other drives out there (there's a more expensive one from Pioneer that is supposed to be the best, but I haven't tried that one yet), and the most compatible. A couple months ago I was pulling my hair out trying to get a good, stable BR burner for a client. I went though about 3 of them, everything from Sony (which doesn't burn DVDs!!! Like.. WTF?!?), to Lite-On, to the older LG CH08-LS10, all of them gave me trouble from either not being able to boot the system up (this wsa the case with the Lite-On drive.. I couldn't install the operating system using the drive as the system wouldn't recognize it as a bootable device, but Windows would see it just fine), BSOD (the older LG), to the system becoming corrupted after a couple uses of the drive (the Lite-On pooched 3 systems I tried the drive on). So far the BH08-LS20 has been rock solid.

Also, the BH08-LS20 does both 25GB and 50GB BR recording, and has Lightscribe support. As for blank media, can't say much on it as the only ones I've used are Sonys and Verbatims. Verbatims are cheaper (Verbatims 50GB media is the same price as Sonys 25GB), but Sonys seem to be slightly better quality wise. I have a client that swears by RiData or TDK. Guess I leave the recommendations for media to someone else.

Re: Blue Ray Recorder thoughts

Just an FYI from what I've found BD media are actually more per GB than an HDD. It would be cheaper to leave all your movies on your HDD than to buy media for them.

Re: Blue Ray Recorder thoughts

Yeah its a problem. I have never opted for a bluray recorder due to the price of the media. buying another 1.5TB storage drive is much more cost efficent.

Not saying you shouldn't mind you blumak and I think tipstaff has answered your question very well. Guy is a constant source of great info !

Yeah same here I just ditched that idea all together because after you spend a good deal of money on a decent recorder then you have to buy the media which is nothing short of outlandishly expensive.

Only thing I've gotten in regards to bluray is a reader that's in my HTPC for playing rented bluray movies (since in my area of the woods some rental places are already renting some movies only in Bluray ) but that's it

I'm definitely not saying that if you have the money don't buy it but when I've seen 1tb drives out on the market here for less than $80.00 it's hard to beat that.
