??? X58 or LGA775??

hi everyone, a little while back my power supply shorted and killed my CPU and motherboard and now i have the opportunity, i'm not sure weather to upgrade to i7 or stay with core 2 quad? Heres the price list

Asus striker ii extreme 790i sli ultra + Intel core 2 Quad Q9400 =£295.99
Asus striker ii extreme 790i sli ultra + Intel core 2 Quad Q6700 =£290.98
Asus P6T Intel X58 Socket 1366 DDR3 Core I7 PCI-E + Intel Core I7 92 = £336.88

Ive heard so may things and read loads of reviews but i'm still stuck as to weather i should upgrade to i7, i hope you can help with my situation as i only have a few days to decide and if you have any other suggestions that would be great.

Go for the i7 solution. For 40 quid more is silly to not do it.

i7 920s hit 4Ghz easily.

You won't really notice improvement over LGA775 if you're just gaming though, but if you use Photoshop or video encode its fantastic.

Re: X58 or LGA775??

The Asus P6T got a decent review, it can hit a bus speed of 200Mhz which will theoretically get you to 4Ghz with the i7-920.

Have you considered the recent LGA1156 platform? I think you should be able to get the mb and cpu for a cheaper price, especially with the i5-750.

Re: X58 or LGA775??

I'll make one decision easy for you: LGA775... this is it's last year now that the LGA1156 i5s and i7s are out. I won't use the term "futureproof" as I think that term is a crock of s**t, but in the "long run", if in a year or 2 you want to upgrade your computer, specifically your CPU, you will have a better chance of getting a CPU that is supported by your i5/i7 motherboard then trying to find a CPU that works on an LGA775 board. In fact, the only CPUs you'd probably find for an LGA775 board would be used ones.

Re: X58 or LGA775??

^ My sentiments exactly. If you had the Q700 you could only get like one or two processors higher if & when you want to upgrade. You'll also be tied down to either ATI or Nvidia (if you intend to dual) and - most likely - dual-channel DDR2. It's kind of like buying a P4 PC that uses DDR and an AGP graphics slot prior to i7's release in comparison.

hmmmm... interesting... will keep that in mind...

how about audio editing... will it sustain load of multiple VSTs, like maybe 5, 6 VSTs at the same time...?

Re: X58 or LGA775??

LGA775 is pretty much dead for the high-end now.........

go with an i5 system if you are thinking of buying a lga775 Quad, its just better......

PCi-E 8x bandwidth is hardly an issue until you get to Dual GPU video cards and even then its a minimal loss

if you really want full bandwidth PCI-E though, get an X58 system now or wait till next year for the i9 CPUs

The thing to remember is that the i3, i5, i7, or i9 is a CPU line, and that Intel will, and has made that line for different platforms. Platforms, in this case, would be motherboards running the x58 or P55 chipsets. As an example, there is an i7 processor for the P55 chipset (socket 1156). As for the i9 processor, it is a 6 core processor that will be the replacement for the high-end i7 processors on the x58 platform, and yes, it is socket 1366 compatible.

Nice choice. Just be aware that you may need to tweak the RAM settings manually to their proper timings as sometimes the board will reduce the timings for RAM above 1066mhz (such as when you try to run Patriots Viper PC3-12000 DDR3 (1600Mhz) Tri Channel kit it will run, by default, at 800Mhz, however it will work at 1600Mhz when set manually).

Also, as soon as you get things put together, first order of business is to update the bios.
