need a new PSU.... AGAIN!

hey guys....

many of you remember that i had bought a 750w PC Power and Cooling PSU since my old PSU couldnt cut it anymore.....

anyways..... since i plan to get a 5870X2 when it launches, i found out i need a 1000W+ PSU to run two of those together..... if i ever actually do that... anyway....

my question, whats a good 1000W+ PSU that can be had for around $200-250?

before, i thought to get the PC Power and Cooling 910w PSU but the price on that skyrocketed since i last saw it....

im thinking the Corsair 1000HX but im wondering if there are any other good deals out there right now that any other DHers have come across....

preferrably single or Dual rail at most....

thanks guys....

Stu typed out each one of those, that's how serious he is.

I'd go for Corsair too, I have a TX850W and it's great.

Re: need a new PSU.... AGAIN!

Come on Kris...you KNEW that the answer was CORSAIR

Seriously, though, you might do a bit more research. It's looking like the 5xxx's are using a bit less power that the 4xxxs.

Plus, an X2 won't use as much power as 2 cards in Crossfire.

The Corsair 850HX may well be enough to power your new setup, unless you think that you may go to a pair of 5870 X2s in crossfire in the future.

Re: need a new PSU.... AGAIN!

As long as your current powersupply is nice enough when it comes to other aspects like noise and efficiency, consider staying with it. A single 5870X2 will be good enough, seriously. That or a Corsair.

Re: need a new PSU.... AGAIN!

i'm still having issue with my Corsair 1000HX..... the power regulation on it is terrible... i have to send it back... it's just not stable at all... i get lower overclocks.... occasional blue screens even at stock values..

Slap in my OCZ StealthXtreme 600watt and everything runs smooth as silk and i can run stable at high overclocks...

I shoulda clued in the first time i fired up the machine with the corsair and saw a blue screen after going a number of months without a hitch.

Coolermaster's higher end PSU's i've never had an issue with..

even when the lower end 500watt Extreme power psu's with fans that have seized (i've had 3 of them out of countless).... have continued to run stable while quite warm..... very impressed with them...

I read this card is a 376W so an 850W psu should do nicely for two cards

Re: need a new PSU.... AGAIN!

imo.. generally i never like the idea of running a PSU at near or even with 10% of peak sustained output..

generally i like to have 25-35% buffer..

My OCZ 600watt stealth extreme was 100% loaded though.... never once overloaded

yea..... but thats really pushing it...... id rather keep the system at less than 100% of the PSU output.... its just more efficient and will help it last longer

Re: need a new PSU.... AGAIN!

well..... basically...

when corsair first went into making PSUs, the models reviewed were incredible for the price.... having incredibly high efficacy and performance that was well over-spec....

the latest example of this is the 1000HX PSU reaching 1200w load in the DH review

they still do that, and at VERY low price points...... for premium PSUs anyway...

one of their OEMs.... Seasonic is pretty much legendary in terms of quality and performance.... just look at the XFX Black edition PSU, its a Seasonic PSU that performs incredibly..

Also, I've never had any problems with OCZ PSU's - Running a StealthXStream 600w at the moment, it's grand. =)

Re: need a new PSU.... AGAIN!

I have this BFG Tech ES SERIES ES-800 800W I won from a DH competition. I was planning on using it on a new system, but there is no way I will build a new system for at least another year or two, so, if you want you can have it for a good price (make me a non crazy offer and I will probably say yes).
I can ask perhaps tomorrow how much it would cost to send it to you by post, but from a quick check they would want about 30 euros. Oh yes, it has never been opened, still in the original box and packaging.

Re: need a new PSU.... AGAIN!

i love the modular cables on the psu's..

just whatever you do..... a Coolermaster Cosmos case + Corsair 1000HX is NOT a good combination....things just don't fit right and i STILL have to use an extension on the P4+P4 8pin CPU 12v cable and that sucker is bloody long (it's about 3 inches short for the setup i've got.....

thanks for the offer man but i dont think it will cut it.....

a system spec'd with dual 5870 x2s (upgrading PSU to handle a fully maxed out system) and a quad core go to 850w itself.... that doesnt count motherboard, memory or any other parts.......

the 950TX should do it but thats a little close to the limit.....

thanks again tho
