Can anyone suggest a headset?

It's time to pass my old headset (which I found in an office) onto my sister.

So far I have seen the Razer Barracuda HP-1, Razer Megalodon and the Logitech G35.

I am looking for something with great sound quality, doesn't necessarily have to have a mic. Preferrably under $160AUD (I think around $130USD?)

ANy suggestions or justifications for the above models?

Re: Can anyone suggest a headset?

well, then you don't need a headset, just a good pair of headphones.
I got my AKG K271 Studio a couple of years ago and they are a great set for gaming and music and movies and pr0n. I got them for 100 euros, if you can find them you should be able to get them cheaper now that there are newer models out.
However, a word of warning. AKG headphones have very distinct sound. Very neutral. You won't find excess bass or anything really. That's why I prefer their headphones over others, I can listen to the sounds as they were made not as the headphones want me to. (hear me Sony?)

Having said that, studio versions of Sony headphones are very good too, although they are IMO an overkill in bass and not as detailed in mid range. Their main problem is with the built quality, especially the cable and its connections, really bad.

I won't touch a Razer HP-1 or any other Razer product. I bought, I think it was the HP-1, anyway it was a 7.1 or something set, and while the sound was good enough for gaming, it lacked quality for music, but the worst thing was that the right (or left) side just stopped working. Razer was quick to reply and sent me a replacement (I sent them mine) and I received a new set. Only that it lasted like an hour or so before it had the SAME problem (and yes I tried other sources). They never replied to my emails and I got stuck with a broken set and minus 110 or so euros. FUCK YOU RAZER.

Where was I? Oh yes, now Logitech, I have never used a Logitech headset so I can't give any input on that.
Just avoid Razer, Creative, products and you are on the right track.

Re: Can anyone suggest a headset?

Creative Fatal1ty headset was the one for me. The sound is crisp and clear, you can crank it up pretty loud (if you have a decent soundcard) and they give about the same bass effect as an 8" subwoofer. Using them in an FPS is fantastic; I could pick up every slight sound at high quality in CoD:UO.

Re: Can anyone suggest a headset?

I'd also look at the Sennheiser PC series if you want a mic (such as the PC161 for around $100, or PC350 for around $200), or even the HD series for ones that don't.

Another set to look at would be the Koss PortaPro ($40-50), although they don't have a mic. I've tried headphones from all over the place, and every time I come back to these. The only time I don't use them is when I'm listening to music or watching movies through my amp, in which case I use my Grado SR125, but you need an amp, or at least a soundcard that can run them (like Azuntech's X-Fi Forte 7.1 or Bravura which has a dedicated headphone amp) or they'll sound like s**t.

Re: Can anyone suggest a headset?

Yeah, it seems at the moment I have a very cheap soundcard (Creative Soundblaster Audigy or something, not even sure lol) although I'm not sure of its specs etc.
I'm sure it doesn't support 7.1 though.

I will take a look at the Fatal1tys, I saw them on my suppliers website for $42 which is nice The place does not stock any Sennheisers however..
Has anyone had experience with the Logitech G35's or Plantronic 995's?

I'd say the opposite is true for the MDR-V6 model in terms of sound quality - flattest response I've heard in a long time, I'd easily pick these over a Sennheiser pair (HD-25) that I picked up for twice the price

but the cable quality leaves a lot to be desired (replaced several times)

EDIT: though for the best quality headset around, it's hard to go past the Sennheiser HMD-25... expensive though

Re: Can anyone suggest a headset?

Might be out of your price range (150USD on newegg) but the Tritton Axpro 5.1 might do you good. It's probably only worth the extra cash if you have a high end sound card or plan to use the headset with a ps3 or xbox 360 since most of the cost is due to extra features designed for consoles. I have a pair and the sound quality is top notch for surround content (wouldn't recommend for music).

Re: Can anyone suggest a headset?

Yep just discovered that link before checking on this thread Zardon

These will be mainly for music listening... I don't tend to play games that often, and when I do, I never notice sound quality tbh.

That JayBird headset looks pretty good, but Im after the full "over head, full ear" typed thing.

Still waiting for my chances in the Razer Moray+ contest, fingers crossed

Re: Can anyone suggest a headset?

If you can find them and if you can afford them, I recommend the AKG-K1000. I tried them a few times (years ago) and they were out of this world. Only for music though, I don't know about games with them.
