New socket 1156 build!

My birthday having just passed, I treated myself with a proper new rig to load my Windows 7 Sig Ed on. My i7 920 is a more then sufficient rig, but this called for something special. So, a trip to Fry's later, I came home with:

Core i7 860
EVGA P55 SLI
8Gb (4x2Gb) Patriot Viper DDR3 1600 (does it's advertised 7-7-7-21 just fine)
Diamond Radeon HD 5870
Patriot Torqx 128Gb
Seagate 750Gb ES.2
Corsair TX750
Pioneer 22x DVDRW
Antec Twelve Hundred full tower
HP 2509m 25" LCD
Saitek Cyborg keyboard
Razer Diamondback mouse

Pretty much a total new build from the ground up minus my old set of speakers I like and don't want to change out yet.

Well, I got to use it for 4 days before the Diamond Radeon bit the dust. And it really went belly up, confirmed by swapping cards with my i7 920 rig. So I took the 5870 back to Fry's, used the exchange plus paid the bit extra, and brought a GTX295 home to hold me over. Installed the GTX295, and went to Zipzoomfly and ordered a pair of HIS Radeon 5870's overnight. They arrive tomorrow. Probably taking the GTX295 back to Fry's and get another Torqx to load my games on.

Re: New socket 1156 build!

Well, I did spend a bit more then Zipzoomfly or Newegg for the total. But the 5870 failing was almost a blessing. By taking it back, getting a GTX295, and just ordering a pair of HIS 5870's from zipzoom, I end up with a better home gaming LAN in the end

I was worried when you said you built a socket 1156 PC with a socket 1366 processor. Then I noticed it was the 860...
Didn't get the i7 950 with an ungodly amount of RAM? Pssh :P

Nah. I love my i7 920 rig. It's served me well for nearly a year. The only thing I mentioned about a socket 1366 chip is that I have one already setup.

Holy cow! That is a heck of a build. Something special indeed.

I got excited just imagining those parts in proximity to one another.

And the final touch to it has arrived. My pair of 5870's are installed and running. Initial down and dirty testing shows phenomenal performance gains over a single 5870 and decent gains over the GTX295 as well.

More hard numbers to come soon...

I'm trying to get a machine prepared with the i7 socket 1156 as well.. but i am not pleased with the ASUS boards available... kinda pisses me off because all the Asus boards have the Via audio chip.. which i am NOT going to touch PERIOD... i am pissed off with the via and Analog Devices audio solution, shitty drivers, and shitty audio management... Realtek still has yet to give me a hint of an issue.

The look at the EVGA P55 boards. They're VERY nice. I wouldn't touch the EVGA X58 boards because it was EVGA's first generation of actual Intel branded chipset. I wanted them to have that one generation under their belt before I jumped on. They make great video cards so I figured they make decent mobos as well. I was right

Hey moshpit, you think you could run the DH Photoshop benchmark to give me an idea of performance with 8GB of RAM versus an i5 750?

I'd really appreciate knowing the numbers a rig like yours is capable of at stock speeds.

Thanks.

Does it require me to have Photoshop? I don't, sadly

Yeah i'm looking at MSI (omg i don't really want to build anything with msi.. but i may have to) and Gigabyte (gigabyte is a bit more expensive but has a great history for me)

Things are still fresh in teh 1156 socket arena in terms of boards... I don't want to rush building machines like this.. but i plan to use the i5's as my new choice for a midrange machine and when the i3's arrive...... this socket will end up being my standard build from then on (775..... bye bye asap)

Whoah, too many posts at once! Sorry bout that.

I think you can DL the PS demo from Adobe's site to run the benchmark. Its cool if you don't have time or don't want to put a large demo on your new clean rig

The Gigabyte UD2 is $109.99 and can be had for cheaper with a i5/i7 combo deal at Newegg. That is if you are daring enough to go micro Judas.

Na i don't like to build machine using micro boards.... or mini...

Like to provide customers with a full size board so they don't have to worry about running out of expanasion capabilities.... and holds it's resale value better to.

But i'm definitely looking at gigiabyte

I've had good experiences with Gigabyte. I'm running one of their EX58-UD3R boards in my secondary rig right now, it's a great bang for buck X58 board. The Gigabyte P965-DS3 was another board that served me well in the early Conroe days.

This is my first EVGA board, but it's so far been a dream board, every bit as easy to work with as Asus or Gigabyte, my 2 favorite board makers. And it simply oozes quality. It's a very top notch brand to look into.

Yeah my experience with EVGA is about the same with MSI and the later/last years of Abit...

I've yet to have a single gigabyte board give me a single bit of trouble

I wasn't fond of EVGA mobos during the Nforce generation chipsets, but their X58's proved to me they can make solid Intel chipset boards. P55 is the first chance I'm giving them, so far so good

Re: New socket 1156 build!

Well i'm personally kinda wanting to wait to see how this Lucid Hydra chip on the newer intel boards works out.....

MSI's BIG BANG is due out sometime REAL soon and i'm just itching to see if lucid can pull the biggest badass crazy as hell solution outa their ass from nowhere and rape the competition (yet somehow still love them)..

Cmon, intermixing ANY graphics GPU you can think of and get all the benefits of doing so.

PhysX + Nvidia brute force + ATI ..... the prospects are great

I'm watching it mainly for the scaling benefits. If they can outscale ATI for dual cards of same type, then I might buy a new mobo. That's all I would have to do though at this point. CPU, ram, vid cards, PSU, hard drives, everything else could stay the same and I could just net the gains of the Hydra. BUT, and this is a big but (not to be confused with big butts), it would have to show true 90%+ scaling on everything it touches to convince me. I've already seen 75% in best case scenarios with my existing setup. 3Dmark 03 shows a crazy amount more, but we won't discuss 3Dmark in a serious discussion

Re: New socket 1156 build!

Well the major benefits that lucid claims and it does make sense.... is that reguardless of the game.. if it has profiles, if the game supports it or not... lucid will load balance the game on the fly making changes on the fly when it needs to to get the most amount of out it all. Meaning essentially no game profiles needed.

I still would like to see how FSAA is applied and how other GPU specific effects are instagated.

Me too. Funny thing that. Before I had dual GPUs, the whole Lucid thing was rather distant to me. Now it's much more interesting

Edit: Still feels weird using CrossfireX on an EVGA board though.

Well, personally Judas I would go with the Gigabyte boards any day of the week. I generally use Gigabyte boards in all the stuff i build for clients and quite frankly they never seem to come back with mobo problems so i think you are safe there.

Well, a week into using my first EVGA mobo, and it's fantastic. Stable, easy to overclock, and feature packed. Also, the color scheme looks 100% better in a windowed case.

Re: New socket 1156 build!

The EVGA mobo's were always some of the sexiest in my opinion. I love their black PCB's (could explain the higher price tag).

Core i7 860
EVGA P55 SLI

Probably taking the GTX295 back to Fry's and get another Torqx to load my games on.

very nice build your getting..btw i have that same keyboard you have in that list not a bad keyboard..
