On my local Craigs List. Guy wants 175.00 for the pair of them. Not sure if they are the older ones with the reference HSF or the newer one (not that it martters a whole lot).

My 3870 X2 is getting a bit long in the tooth, and while it was a good match for the 4800+, I'm thinking that with my Ph II 940 it's not enough GPU.

I've been thinking about a 5870, but at the $$ he's asking, this is awfully tempting.

What say you guys? Yea or Nay?

If they haven't been abused and you don't care about DX11 I'd say go for it. That's a steal considering one of them sells for about that much in Canada.

Called the guy. It turns out that one has the reference HSF, and the other one has the heat piped one.

I'm gonna go for it. It's just too danged good a deal not to.

I think I'll advertise my 3870 X2

It has a Koolance waterblock on it, and I still have the original HSF as well.

Anyone have any idea as to what it would be worth?

i think you will be happy, the 620HX should be ok for the 2 cards but if you have a bit more juice they would benefit, depending on what all you system is made up of. Grab an Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo or something for the other card

OK, Far Cry 2 in game benchmark, used the RANCH as that gives the lowest FPS. Running the CAT 9.8's

From left to right, My normal settings, Results, Maximum settings I could get, Results.

At the end of the 2nd test, the poor old 3870 X2 was crying "Mommy,mommy, PLEASE make the bad man stop!". Going to DX10, and 8X on the AA just brought the poor baby to it's knees.

Once I get the 4870s up and running, I'll run it again with the same settings, and post those results.

Make sure you install the latest patch for Far Cry 2. It greatly improves performance.

if money is a issue for you, i might ask you to go for this first, as a 4870 and 5870 have a very huge price difference, ATI 4800 series card still able to last for at least 1 years i guess, if you not a gaming freak, you can go for the 4870

I called the guy and told him I would buy them, and arranged to meet him. He said that after he got off from work he would pull the cards from his system, and call me so we could meet. By 8:30 I still hadn't heard from him, so I'm not sure if he was runnng late, lost my phoine number, or just decided not to sell them. Anyway, I called his number, got the machine, and left a message.

Another possibility is that someone called after I did and offered him more $$ and he sold them to someone else. Given the $$ that he was asking, that's highly possible.

If I don't hear from him tomorrow, I guess I'll just have to hope I win the 4870 X2, or 5770 that are up for grabs here

I have my fingers crossed for you.

As much as I don't care for dual card setups there's no denying the simple "wow factor" when someone shows up at a LAN rocking two or three of them, even if they aren't the latest and greatest.
