Computer wont shutdown

Hay guys a friend of mine asked me to help him with his computer its an I7 920 machine and its almost brand new only two or three month old.

Here is the problem he is having whenever he turns off the computer it goes to the shutting down screen and stays there forever and never shuts off until he presses the power button does anyone know what the problem could be coz am stumped

He is running vista home basic, if there is any other info that you would like to know please let me know and I will try to get it.

i had a similar issue on my xp machine about a month ago. it took about 10 mins to shut down, and appeared to just freeze on the shut down screen. dont know if its the same issue or not...

check the event viewer for errors. something about a connection dropping to a server...i dont have the logs anymore, and im just going off memory.

for whatever reason, the files that dial into microsofts servers to check for updates had gone corrupt. it was hanging while the system was trying to shut down, which made for a very long shut down.

That is the exact problem, he is one of those people that believes that he has to update everything to the latest version and was having problems updating from the microsoft recently

how do i fix it ??

PS: on his machine it will not turnoff at all even if you leave it overnight

Well i tried that fix and still waiting for him to give me feedback but so far the problem has not occurred again so it looks like its solved thanks a lot Dark Lord
