Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
There was frequently a steady jump in Dimm size doubling every so often, at a steady rate.
However there still seems to be a massive lack of DDR2/DDR3 4gb DIMMS... 8gb or 12gb dual/triple channel packs. I've had on order a 2x4gb Dual channel and a 3x4gb triple channel kit for nearly a year and it's never been filled even though the "product" excists.. it just is apparently quite difficult to get. The price of it was reasonable to. Considering your getting twice the amount of memory as other kits, you were only paying just shy of, either above or below that of what it would cost for 2x of the 2gb dimm kits. That was ages ago, what's happened? Where is it? Wonder how many today would jump at the idea of having the 4gb dimms rather doubling up and filling every slot with the current generation 2gb.

You've got quite the point there, especially since 64 bit was suppose to make large memory no problem.

Re: Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
There was a piece of news that was posted about Hynix testing some new DIMM's but I can't recall where it was and since I'm at work I doubt I can track down the website. I'm surprised DH hasn't been filtered.
***EDIT: I found this. |

Re: Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
I see n x 4GB memory for sale at Newegg, in both DDR2 and DDR3.
Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Memory,Desktop Memory,8GB (2 x 4GB) Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Memory,Desktop Memory,12GB (3 x 4GB) Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Memory,Desktop Memory,16GB (4 x 4GB) I'm assuming that you have ordered from a wholesaler as opposed to a retailer? If so, I'd be on the phone with one of their reps and giving him an earfull.

I can understand if you're doing extreme video or photo editing. Other than that there is such a thing as overkill. I'm assuming most people would want 16gb in their computer for bragging rights.

Re: Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
What i look at is longevity.
The least amount of hardware stuck in the machine, the better. And better yet, the least amount of slots populated.. the better. With 4gb DIMMS rather then 2gb means i can jam 8gb of ram in the machine and it still leaves the customer open to 16gb down the road.... or 12gb of ram with 24 down the road. AND it usually means the resale value or overall value of the machine remains the highest where as smaller dimms are just a pain in the ass. And example of which is any machine you usually get from prebuilts with 4gb is 4x1gb dimms, this is a waist, as your not really saving that much AND your just going to end up yanking some of it out just to stick in more and then you've got 2 sticks laying around that are dropping in value. I utterly hate those systems, someone wants to stick some memory in it to get an upgrade, and your better of just ripping all 4 sticks out and replace them with higher capacity 2x sticks then the entire works. Laptops are horrible for this... I've got like 60 512mb DDR2 PC4200-5400 for laptops. Just laying around collecting dust, no one really wants them as most laptops capacity using those sticks is 1gb (2 slots). Get a laptop in, someone wants more memory, yank out 2 512's and stick in a single 2gb stick and BAM, double the memory and still capable of sticking in an addtional 2gb down the road. Do that to enough laptops and you understand how quickly you can get it build up. They use the smallest modules to meet the highest capacity by filling every orphus in the machine. Liquidating their stocks when they should be using the highest supported capacity for a single slot. YES yes it keeps initially costs lower, but that's the fundamental failure of the system. I've still got machines coming in with 128 or 256mb ddr2 or ddr1, Actually recently had a machine with 4 128mb ddr1 modules jammed into the machine, upgrading it to 2x 1gb quadrupling the total memory is quite the thing, lovely to see the customers jaw drop. But now i've got 4x 128mb ddr1 modules i'll have zero use for ever.

Yea just bin them, or donate.
I used to keep everything, but it comes apoint where it's just like why the hell do I have a draw full of socket7 coolers, I mean sure this coolermaster puppy cost me £40 at the time, but unless I melt it down for the copper it's useless. Less is more, junk it don't trunk it. |

Re: Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
I do donate them to people with old machines that don't want anything fancy..
however there aren't anything remotely local that has any use for them.. the school here doesn't use any laptops.... neither do the students really.

Re: Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
I'm not a big time gamer but Lord Of The Rings Online was a notoriously memory intensive game. Even running at ultra high settings at 1680x1050 in a crowded area (Bree or the 1st Hall) didn't use up 4GB in Vista. More than that isn't an issue for me.

Re: Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
It's not necessarily all about where you can use it PER program...
There are a number of people that play games that have exceed the 5gb usage simply by having multiple clients of the same game loaded.... so even if a single client consumed up to 2.1gb (which is about the maximum a single 32bit program can use before things get weird for most) have 2 of those clients open and suddenly your in the 3 to 4gb+ range VERY easily. What alot of people don't realize as well is the fact that alot of programs start shuffling and tucking itself in as it doesn't have anywhere to go with lack of memory. This is why a good number of people when running vista or win7 with 64bit OSes see such a NOTICEABLE difference going from 4gb to 6gb or 4 to 8 or 6 to 8 even. It's even more massive when going from 2gb to 4gb+ However like i said this isn't entirely the point, the point is that these products should be on the market, there is a market for them, people WOULD buy them, the largest modules you can put in with as few modules as possible is key. People would prefer 2x4gb over 4x2gb. Enthusiasts that are going for the all time high aren't even bother with 2gb modules as they are getting tighter timings with 1gb or 512mb modules. I was shocked to see so many vantage mark tests where 1-1.5gb was apparently common for the high scores.

Re: Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
Judas I just ordered the Patriot 8GB kit from NewEgg.ca they are $299 with free shipping. They offer decent 5-5-5-12 timing @ 1.9v which is better than most out there.
Newegg.ca - Patriot Gamer Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model PGS28G6400ELK - Desktop Memory |

Re: Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
I would like to snag an 8GB kit for my PC as well but they just aren't in abundance.
It would really help out in dual boxing World of Warcraft and running some other Apps in the background like I always seem to do.

Re: Where is our 4gb Dimms dammit
I think $299 is reasonable for the larger dimms. I would have liked to pay less but 4 Dimms never seems as stable as two. The timings are decent also so they should perform well or I hope so anyway. I dont expect to see them until Monday
