HDD Problems
Hi All,
i have been trawling through the forums, looking for some help with a 'problem' i have with my lap top. Following recent slow boot up issues, my dad decided to reinstall vista home 32 via the dvd. Great, problem fixed or so he thought as he headed off home. I was left with no drivers for the Amilo Li1718, no functioning hot keys (have managed to get them from Fujitsu web) but remaining drivers for dvd re writer etc still amiss. The main problem which i have discovered is that windows now is on my C drive and D drive (regularly get message stating C drive low on memory - not really much on system). when i have looked at the drives there appears to be a number of files highlighted in blue, bit reluctant to delete one or the other without some advice. Please help T2080 @ 1.73Ghz Thanks in advance Mark |

Re: HDD Problems
What is the mnufacturer of the dvd re writer you could try and get them from their website, "drive low on memory" <--as for this when installing vista it usually keeps all the previous windows data in a folder called old windows if am not mistaken, unless you have formated the drive before installing if that is the case you can retrieve what you need from that folder and delete it that should free up some space.

Re: HDD Problems
Thanks for that re the driver for the DVD re writer, im not sure what 'the ole man' did, however both Vista installs are pretty much the same, neither says old etc. difference between them are the files that are listed in blue, and of course the loss of memory space.
Cheers Mark |

Re: HDD Problems
For the missing drivers, did you try windows update?
The C and D drives are both two HDs/partitions? |

Re: HDD Problems
I'd say you are better off backing up all important data and doing a new clean install, after setting the partitions in a way that better suits you.

Re: HDD Problems
Thanks iPlayer and Crow,
In response to Crow there are 2HD, C = 32.7GB and D = 65.4GB. when exploring both, there are copies on both of similar files etc, however some are empty and highlighted blue for some reason. Iplayer as a last resort i may well have to do as you suggest, just wondered if there was any freeware that can erm 'do the hard work' and configure both HD and erase the duplicate files. from a memory point of view there is not that much that the lap top is being used for other than i tunes and web browsing, have been through programmes and removed unused ones. Run spybot, avg regularly. Thanks Mark |

Re: HDD Problems
Sounds like multiple installs of a windows OS and that by default there were 2 partitions however now the primary one is full.
Bit of a mess. Also sounds like he didn't use the "restore to factory defaults" option obviously because he didn't want to completely erase the previous installs files. Best option is to grab a USB flash drive, put everything that you need onto it (backup documents/music/video/favorites/contacts/emails/etc) Depending on the manufacturer of the LAPTOP (can you give a make/model?) usually it's just a matter of pushing 2 or 3 keys when you first power on to get to the factory restore. This will wipe things clear and install all the necessary programs and drivers. At which point when completed, go into the programs and features under control panel and start removing the garbage you don't use or have no need for. Otherwise if your more confident, backup what you need, boot from vista disk. When you presented with picking a partition to install too, delete the 2 partitions then select the unused partition which should be the combined space of both that were deleted. And install. When complete, go to the manufacters website and download the latest software/drivers that you need.

Re: HDD Problems
Hi Judas,
thanks for the response, my lap top is an old Fujitsu Amilo Li 1718, which was doing the job for what i needed it to do, as mentioned just really for i tunes / browsing. I do have the Vista Recovery DVD, just keen to get this mess sorted. Looking for the 'best' way possible to do this, so open to advice, info on steps to ensure this. Thanks again Mark |
