Im currently looking at two panels but they both seem like cheap TN LCD monitors... im looking at the...
Samsung 2494SW Samsung 2343BWX all i can see different is that one is an inch bigger and costs $20 more for that one inch... other then that it looks to me they are both very similar, im leaning towards the 2494SW simply for the 1920*1080 native resolution since the 2343BWX has an oddball one 2048*1152... if i set the 2343BWX to 1920*1080 would it be as sharp as if it were set to the native? thanks! |

Re: Monitor Comparison
Well if you don't run a panel's at it's native resolution it's not going to look as good. At the very worst it might even have an added delay to upscale the image.
If you're going to be gaming on this monitor you probably don't want too high of a resolution anyways, unless you upgrade your computer regularly to keep it on the top. |

Re: Monitor Comparison
2048x1152, is this 16:9? first time i've read of such a resolution. my eyes would hurt from the strain of reading the fonts with this resolution

Re: Monitor Comparison
2048x1152 is the same aspect ratio as 1920x1080, so technically if you scale the 2343BWX down to 1920x1080 everything should be good. It's kind of weird to see a 23 inch having above 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. A quick glance on Newegg shows that the 2494SW has a higher contrast ratio (although it might not mean anything since there's no standard way to define this) than the 2343BWX. Not sure what you will be using it for, but if it's not heavy video/animation editing, either of these TN panels should be fine.

Re: Monitor Comparison
It all depends on what you use your computer for. For productivity apps and especially some visual content creation, higher resolution would be beneficial. For gaming, it wouldn't mean much except that higher resolution would put more strain on the GPU as it'd have some 13-14% more pixels to process. For watching video, I wouldn't worry that it's not exactly 1920*1080 but slightly higher, it shouldn't reduce the clarity of the picture.
I think that you're best off going to a retail store and looking at the picture each is producing, stuff like colour reproduction and vertical viewing angle (especially if you'll be doing some Photoshop work on it) and level of black they can produce (for watching movies).

Re: Monitor Comparison
IvanV, since neezee is aware that these are TN panels, I have to assume he is not going to do most of the stuff that you mentioned. TN panels have horrible viewing angles, and their color reproduction is poor (compared to S-PVA, S-IPS, etc.). Most people wouldn't notice these things except the photo editing/processing pros. Anyway, I would personally go for the 24 inch. A 23 inch monitor with 2048x1152 resolution is going to make everyday tasks more difficult - especially things like texts and small images.

Re: Monitor Comparison
Good points. Still, I have a monitor with almost identical DPI, slightly above 102 (1920*1080 on 21.5"), and, as long as one has a good eyesight, it's not an issue.
Also, level of black and actual contrast can only be seen with a monitor working in front of you, they are not equal on every TN monitor and, considering that lots of people I know occasionally watch a movie on their PCs, it's well worth checking out prior to purchase. Other than that, I agree with you on characteristics of TN panels and that none of them may be a professional's tool, but a hobbyist on a budget might be forced to settle for one (cheap non-TN monitors cost as much as a very good PC) and at that point, the fact that not all TN monitors suck equally comes into play.

the difference between 2048x1152 is marginal but noticeable. Setting the 2343bwx to 1920x1080 = ugly, don't do it, keep it max native resolution it's an amazing monitor. The 50,000:1 contrast ratio rocks, i've actually both monitors, playing back 1080p content on either looks almost identical, but i find the the 2048x1152 resolution is sure might more impressive then the slighterly larger 24" 1080p. Actually the picture quality of the 2343bwx i think is quite a bit better, very good viewing angles and hasn't given my a lick of issue. I highly recommend them.
