rolleyes samsung ecogreen f2 1tb?

I asked my bro to go pick me up a 1TB HDD from town today..

I was expecting he would bring me back the same Hard Disk that he bought him self recently, but no. They had non of 'thos ones' left in the shop.

instead, he got me the Samsung ecogreen F2 1TB, "this one is more expensive.." he said. Fair enough i thought. If it cost more, maybe its better? right?

So I looked on the side of the box and i read the words 'Ecogreen' Immediately alarm bells started to ring in my head, as I started to imagine images of the Toyota prius & penny-racer style smart cars.

Now I'm really not a green kind of guy when it come to things like these.. I don't expect I will ever own a Ferrari, but I do expect my humble 5 cylinder audi quattro to be as good as it can be..

So after a little googleing I learn that this ecogreen HDD is only 5400rpm, and is designed with 'power saving' in mind.

So I guess my question is, is this Hard disk any good? or is it just a tree hugging POS.?

Yet Samsung 'claim' its as fast as a 7200rpm drive.

So.. Do i keep it? or take it back to the hippies ?

I wouldn't recommend it for a system drive, but otherwise it's fine. Compared to the ones in your profile though it may be good even as system drive as well, but getting an F3 model HD103SJ instead would be ideal. They've been in short supply lately but seem to be coming back in volume now.

If I take it back, shall i get HD103SJ F3 instead? or is there a better Hard Disk I can get for the money? (£79.99)

None better that I know of, though WD and Seagate have drives with similar performance and people prefer different brands for various reasons. I have two of the HD103SJ and they're damn fast and make very little noise.

well I bought an F3. & there £20 cheaper now . (yes I know they are even less online)

But is it worth getting a second one to use in Raid? Is that what you are using two of them for?

Would raid make a noticeable improvement? & will my PSU be enough?

Your PSU will bust in flames j/k

The RAID setup don't ad more consumption than the drives them selfs... It's all done by the chipset but that old nvidia chipset isn't as good as Intel's or the 3rd party RAID chips. Why you may ask. The chipset is so old.
