No fans, No lights, No POST
hey guys
round a friends tonight, one of their comps having some issues. title says all, it's completely dead. so far he's swapped out everything for new, except the CPU and he hasn't changed the case (i suspect power button/cable problem personally, its happened to me). he doesn't have a spare cpu to test, but would a fried cpu leave everything else completely dead like that ?? or has he just been real unlucky and got himself two DOA mobo's ? thoughts ?

Front panel switch is easy to check, I've seen the switches go bad too. Don't know if a dead cpu would do this or not.....

but then, if the cpu was borked, and was immediately screwing the mobo, that might do it too, huh ?

I guess that's possible...... won't mobos produce post codes with no CPU? Try with no cpu in the socket......

Does the PSU fan work?
Also, many mainboards have a light on them, does it? If yes, see if it turns on or not.

Re: No fans, No lights, No POST
Yank everything out... leaving only the motherboard and the cpu and the power supply connected to it.
even unplug the usb and other headers including the power switch and reset switch and such.. so basically 100% bare. Using a jumper you may have laying around, quickly JUMP the 2 pins that are for the power switch header (if your careful you can use any metal thing be it scissors or screw driver PROVIDED you only connect those 2 pins very quickly) if the board doesn't beep and scream at you when it fires up or the fans don't turn on, i think your kinda toast. Last resort is to remove the CPU completely and leave just hte motherboard and psu connected.. it should beep at you oh and make sure the motherboard has a pc-speaker.

Re: No fans, No lights, No POST
On some mobos the cmos reset ones will also start it up, while resetting bios settings to default values. I do this very often.
![]() What was the problem then? |
