$68 1TB Internal Hard Drive

Saw that HITACHI Deskstar 1TB Internal Hard Drive OEM is $68 TODAY FROM 1:00PM PT to 11:59PT at newegg..

What comments do you guys have about Hitachi and this particular hard drive? At such a great price I might have to sway from Western Digital just this once.

Re: $68 1TB Internal Hard Drive

People don't usually like anything with the name deskstar due to a very very bad batch of drives while the name was still in use by IBM. (Deathstar click of death etc). I have used 2 different IBM and 2 Hitachi drives over the years and the hitachi at least are still operational, one of them is 8 and the other is 6ish years old now. Just make sure you do a search for the specific model. You will find some negative comments for all hard drives, including deaths, but unless you find a crazy amount of negative comments (percentage), you should be fine.

Re: $68 1TB Internal Hard Drive

I'm currently using 1 of those Hitachi drives in my NAS storage with an older HDT721010SLA360 1TB drive from them as well. On the whole I've had less trouble with Hitachi drives over the last couple years vs Seagate or WD. I've maybe replaced 3 Hitachi drives for clients in the last year (2x320GB and 1x500GB) vs triple that for Seagate or WD. On the other hand, Samsung... I have never had any luck with their crap. Every single drive from them (and I do mean every single drive) I've had to replace within a year or less except their S2 Portables.

What to say about the Hitachi drives? They can be a bit loud during heavy access, and they sure as hell won't win any speed contests, however as I said they've been reliable for me. Personally I buy them for storage drives, but not as a main drive unless you don't care about speed, and can live with the access noise.
