Next-gen upgrade
I'm going to start saving in the coming months for a new-age system. I don't really need it as such, I just like to be up-to-date with my software and hardware. It's an old habit that doesn't want to die - new Office comes out, I upgrade, new Windows OS comes out, I upgrade, etc. It's the same with PC hardware - sckt 939, sckt AM2, Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, ATI 3000 series, 4000 series (5000 will be before long too). My wallet hates me, ebuyer loves me. But, I have separate savings so no real loss. It's something I like so meh.
Anyway, there's a point to this post here somewhere... I'm after either a 1156 or 1366 setup and I think I'm leaning towards the latter. 1366 just seems like it has more upgrading potential at the moment and, tied in with multiple 16x PCI-E, triple-channel memory and the ability to have faster processors it seems like the way to go in terms of technology. Am I wrong here and 1156 is going to last longer or will 1366 stay alive? I'll be going with USB 3 & SATA-3 and an ASUS motherboard. I'm thinking of getting the i7 930 processor (little more than i7 920 and costs a hell of a lot less than faster 1366 processors). Budget's looking towards the £700 region.

Re: Next-gen upgrade
Why don't you wait a few months for the 6+ cores CPUs?
I guess I am like you, only that I don't have the money this time around lol. I like to think I am getting ready to get my new next system. If I could (or if I can, you never know!) get a new system in the following months, I would go for an AMD solution. Not that I have anything against my current CPU or Intel CPUs in general. But, one of the new 6+ core CPUs (AMD) will probably cost FAR less than Intel's solution and gaming wise the difference will be close to zero for games with the similar solution by Intel. That extra money can be put into something more in other part of the system (6000 series this Fall/Winter?), or SSDs, or locating a chrome PC case, etc or extra money for software etc. Hell, if you wait till the end of the year, Nvidia might finally release their DX11 cards by then. I agree with the Asus call, great experience with their products on my end, and definitely with the USB3 and SATA3. No good reason to not get them if you can. I am just not sure it is worth buying any current i7 CPUs over what you have now. Of course if you can waste the money, do it, but I just don't see gaining anything by upgrading to that. Real world difference just doesn't justify the purchase IMO. If you are set to buy Intel, at least wait for the next line with the extra cores, at least that makes more sense to me. If you 100% want to buy something now, you could always buy a nice chrome monitor.

Re: Next-gen upgrade
Won't hexa-cores likely be released in the similar way as its predecessors of multiple cores? I.e.: The higher clock speeds will be released first with the higher price tag but the lesser cores will have higher clock speeds?
For example, say a 2.8GHz hexa-core processor comes out first, the 3.2GHz quad-cores will out-power them in gaming but the additional cores will benefit more for multi-tasking. I may well wait to see what becomes of the six core generation systems because they'll likely bring with them new motherboards that will support them. If this means a new socket then logically they'll have lesser processors that will be supported on the same boards. Chrome monitor... nah, way too much bling for me.

Re: Next-gen upgrade
Well, even a slower 6core would be preferable to a 4 core one. At least that's how I see it.
I don't know how they will release them, but since it will only be a couple of months perhaps, before they do, why not wait? It's not like your system is going out of style.
