Re: PSU Requirement

My thought as well. I researched newegg for the cheapest 80 Silver PSU and got this OCZ PSU for $69.99 (after rebate). Seems like a good choice...but then, its EOL

Newegg.com - OCZ Z-Series OCZZ650 650W ATX12V 2.2/ EPS12V 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Active PFC Power Supply Compatible with Intel Core i7

i've yet to try a Z series OCZ psu.....

I've still got all the first generation MOD Stream power supplies out and no failures yet.

just had 2 of my machines i build 4 years ago come in with those.... and working dandy (aside from the by todays standards, lack of ram)

Well, if you are running a 4850 with that PSU there's no reason that you shouldn't be able to run the 5850, since the 5xxx series cards use LESS power than the 4xxx cards.

Still, you are most likely pushing that CX400 pretty hard, so it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to go to one of the 550w Corsairs. Maybe even a 650w if you are thinking of doing Crossfire in the future.

This is my fallback model, given the low price in our market...

I'm not sure about the 5850 consuming lower power draw than my 4850 based on this graph from x-bit:

I was able to buy my CX400W in the used market for half its SRP; maybe I'll get lucky again and buy a used HX650 deeply discounted; if not, its OCZ PSU for me

Re: PSU Requirement

that graph doens't look right...

i know for a fact that the 5770 under peak load doesn't come anywhere close to that of what a 4850 draws let alone what a 4830

Re: PSU Requirement

Got it!

I traced the UL number (E243823) and was able to link it to Impervio Electronics as the OEM for this unit. Further research pointed me to Silverstone Decathlon and Olympia PSUs as being the same OEM.

Anybody else heard of Impervio PSUs?

Re: PSU Requirement

I have never heard of Impervio but Silverstone generally has had some pretty good PSU's a few years back although I haven't followed the PSU market since I bagged my Ultra X4.

Re: PSU Requirement

I did further research and found out that it's actually Sirtec who manufactures these MXSP models. Sirtec manufactures High Power PSUs, used by big PC companies

Re: PSU Requirement

Thought I'd ask here rather than starting another topic. What are the chances of my PSU surviving me adding a GTX 280 OC2?

Main power hoggers: overclocked q9550, Zotac GTX 295.
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 700W.

you would be maxed out for sure with both cards and that PSU but Grace would be more qualified to answer that
