New Barton 2500 Problems

I just got a package with a new barton from my friend that he bought off newegg and when my asus a7n8x deluxe posts it says the memory frequency is at 100mhz. And from there it says it's running in safe mode and that I need to set my processor speed correctly.

You'll have to go into the bios and manually set it to be 166 mhz.

and if that doesn't work you have a mobo that doesn't support bartons.

I did manually set it to 166 =\ It wouldn't post right, but then again when I put this processor in at 133 mhz fsb it wouldn't post either, I had to put it at 138.

That is definately strange...I would say to check two things.

First, check your manual (can't find mine right now) but there is a jumper on the board to manually set the fsb to either 100 or 133 (I believe) make sure you set it to 133.

Second, try clearing the CMOS (Again check the manual), if that doens't work there may be something wrong with your board.

The jumper settings is for 133/166 and 200. And it's set to 133/166. Maybe I should just use this as an excuse to turn it in for a 2.0 revision board lol

dont asus boards have a jumper free mode so you can configure options via the bios? check the manual.

yes it does Sin jin. And it is set that way from the factory.

Dude clear the CMOS, start the computer and go into the bios and set everything the way it should be, then restart it. If you are still having problems make sure that you are using the latest BIOS revision for your board.

Also....position 1-2 is for FSB333/266 and 2-3 is for 200........in other words.......166/133 and 100. The board is made for.....and handles the 333 Barton cores without any problem.....ALL revisions of it as long as the BIOS is up to date.

As long as all the jumper's are set in the default location on the board.....it is in "jumper free" mode and everything can be adjusted in the BIOS. On the prior VIA chipset motherboards, such as the A7V333, there was an actual jumper for jumper free mode.

Well my bios is 1004 so I think that's pretty up to date. I'll try the processor again tomorrow. I manually set the fsb to 166mhz and set the ram timings to 7-2-2-2 and left the multipliar alone.

Definetly check the manual, contact asus as well, I didnt have any probs putting a barton on my uncles A7n8X Deluxe board, it was already set at 166. No probs on my board with a 2500 + an Soyo Dragon Lite. if u still have probs, RMA it and send it out.

1. CLEAR CMOS
2. Get the manual out and read about CMOS clearing on the MOBO - I think you just disconnect a little cable and plug it in next to where it was originally plugged in, and it automatically takes you back.

You can always just remove the battery and power cable if you want to clear the CMOS.

The MSI motherboard has a jumper that phyically forces the FSB, and the memory to run at 100MHz... I dont know if the ASUS has this function or not... but it might be worth looking into!

When using this jumper on the MSI ... the system does remind you that you are running in safe mode with a warning text during the BIOS initiation.

Yes the A7N8X does, so do all the other new Asus boards.. this is what I was talking about in my above post.

Well I finally had time to mess around with the motherboard. And I figured out the problem, the motherboard will not post if the CPU FSB and Ram FSB are synchronized. If they're the same the motherboard won't post. Right now the cpu fsb is at 166 and the memory is at 200 o.O

I really don't know what's causing it to not post with the stuff being synched.

And yes I cleared the C-mos)

I messed around some more, they can't be the same speed, and the ram can't be slower than the cpu or no post. The ram is some good corsair and it seems to be running fine at 200.
