HDD I/O Error on WD 1 TB Green HDD

I've had some very good luck over the years with HDDs. I think I've maybe 3-4 to go bad but I've also dealt with others that had HDDs go bad.

Just a few days ago I picked up a brand new WD 1 TB Green OEM drive. Just about an hour ago I noticed it wasn't accepting screenshots from FRAPS.

So, I minimized my game and tried to check the drive for the images. After a very, very long loading animation, I got a "I/O Error" message.

I shut down the system and, after a very long pause at initializing the devices, Windows started to load and then I was promptly instructed to check one of the drives....which, for some reason it did it on my OS Drive which is NOT the 1 TB drive.

After the CHKDSK completed, the system rebooted and the new drive was not present. I rebooted again and disconnected that drive. Things went hunky dory like they're supposed to.

Once Windows was up and running, I connected that drive again and, after a few moments, it initialized and all my files are there.

The question: Can this be a minor glitch or should I conclude the drive is bad and get it exchanged already?

(Of course, if it does happen again anytime soon, that will answer the question and it's going back. Mainly, since I've had such good luck with drives, I'm wondering just how concerned I should be already.)

Have you tried a different cable? May as well rule that out before an RMA

Using the same cable that was used with the previous HDD. If I do get another error, I'll try a new one.

So far, though, [knock on wood] no problems and it's responding ever so fast!

I would dump that drive faster than KITT would jump over a vehicle.

Sure sounds like the controller is getting ready to go. I would back your stuff up, and get it replaced. Consider yourself lucky it didn't decide to dump w/o you noticing.

Out of curiosity, is this drive attached to the same system in your sig, which is running Windows 7, or is it on an different one, maybe one using XP?

The drive is attached to the system spec'd over there on the left.

Just an update: Since disconnecting and reconnecting the drive there's been no repeat. I intend to keep a very close eye on how this develops. The drive is less than a week old.

Just make sure you have backups. The drive, in my opinion, is going to fail.

Re: HDD I/O Error on WD 1 TB Green HDD

I had replaced my HHD (same as in my specs) , the first one I got didn't work at all. I guess there is a percentage of failure among WD HDDs. Can you use fraps normally now , if you encounter another problem It is better to RMA the drive or better replace it with a black caviar.

So far, yes, FRAPS is working well. BUT, at the very first sign of trouble, it's going back and, yes, I intend to get a Black version. This is the very first Green I've ever picked up.

I do believe that this one is going back ASAP. I can't recall getting a bad HDD out of the box, though.

Re: HDD I/O Error on WD 1 TB Green HDD

The faulty WD Green HDD was returned without any problem. Totally refunded my money on the spot.

I ended up getting a Samsung HD103SI SATA drive with 32 MB Cache.

It installed easily and, so far [knock on wood] has given me no problem at all.

Frankly, I've had several Samsung HDDs over the years and they ALL are still in working condition. Just some of them are now way too small to be of any real benefit to me.
