What would you do?

Not sure if this is the right section...

As many of you already know, Sapphire are giving away a 1250W PSU, a 5870 and a AM3 motherboard with £2000 to spend in Overclockers (or, for the US, $3000 to spend in CyberPower).

Would would you get/build if you won?

Re: What would you do?

UK and US only?

I could build a real monster with £2000 to spend. 4 5870's, watercooling and so on...

Details, man, details. Specifics, based on one of those two websites
I'm intrigued to see what people would come up with given a budget like that.

Re: What would you do?

I'd probably go with a Raven or other such insanely overpriced yet completely bitchin' case, grab a Gulftown CPU, 12GB of memory, a few SSD's, a 5970 and three 22" monitors or possibly one really, REALLY big monitor.

It's hard to say.

I'm building a $1500 rig for a guy and my head is spinning with the hardware he is putting in. My entire upgrade cost me about $20 by the time everything was counted (selling my old rig, contest winnings, etc) so being able to drop that kind of cash is just dumb founding.

I think I could sum it up in 5 words and a picture.

Kid in a candy store.

Re: What would you do?

When you think it through all this top-end stuff is beyond ridiculously-priced. £2000 is a lot for a PC.
Intel 6-core = £900
5970 = >£500
You're now left with £600. It's not that much any more.

I'll have a look up later of the budget but I'm thinking 6-core AMD with SSD and 4GB DDR3. Graphics card pending budget review.

Re: What would you do?

Well I wouldn't go completely insane with what I bought with a 6-core processor and three-way graphics but I thinl I'd make good use of the budget.

Crucial RealSSD C300 256GB
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 2048MB "Eyefinity 6 Edition" (making it two)
Asus Rampage III Extreme Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM
LG E2250V 22" Widescreen LED Monitor
Kingston HyperX 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3-12800CL9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
Coolermaster CM-690 II Advanced Dominator Case - Black

I'd add my current WD 750GB Black, the 300GB HDD and 1TB HDD to the rig and keep the sound system, monitor, CPU fan (I still have the original so I can flog the CPU), mouse & keyboard. I'd also utilise the PSU from the winnings. 1250W should more than suffice for those specs.
I'd then take the motherboard won, add a Phenom x4 955 and spend sold items on 4GB DDR3, use my current SSD and make an updated rig for my fiance.

That would take me to £1,992.60 including postage. I'm sure I could spend £7 somewhere, maybe cable ties or something.

I answered this question in the news post regarding said competition before I saw it here :P

Then the £2000 voucher? Still have to pay vat on that, which is £350. Ouch. But the earnings from the Ebayage should cover it.

That leaves me free to massivley overhaul my desktop with choice OCUK parts, nice Lian Li case and X58 setup I suppose, then it's time to by some GTX480s for ebay with the change!

Re: What would you do?

You never pay VAT on receipt of vouchers. A £2000 voucher will get you up to £2000 worth of items for wherever the voucher is for.
