New card ATI or nVidia?

Hey, so I am pretty sure my geforce 8800 has died. Earlier today I was playing tf2 and it froze and had some very bizarre issues with rendering, like weird glassy textures and lines everywhere, and it then eventually crashed. Won't even boot up now anymore. This is after I got rivatuner and boosted fan speed to 80% while gaming. Lowered temps about 10-12C but, well it may have been too late. Tomorrow I am going to get some thermal paste and try to revive it but I have already looked into a new card.

I wouldn't like to spend over $200CAD for a GPU right now as I still need a CPU/mobo/RAM combo. But I was looking at 5770s or GTS(/X?) 2xx although I don't know much about the newer nVidia cards if it's a good deal I'm down. My PSU is Newegg.ca - OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply and I don't think I will run sli/crossfire so it should work with most things.

Any suggestions on a higherish end card?

Re: New card ATI or nVidia?

Actually you have pretty good timing if you're buying a 5770.

If you don't mind mail in rebates NCIX is selling the Powercolor version for $150 after rebates.

NCIX.com - Buy Powercolor Radeon HD 5770 PCs 875MHZ 1GB 4.9GHZ GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI DP DIRECTX11 PCI-E Video Card - AX5770 1GBD5-PPG In Canada.

Also of note, this week they're offering shipping for $6 if you buy over $100. Obviously this qualifies!

Re: New card ATI or nVidia?

Yeah man, do as others have suggested: grab a 5770. Your PSU will easily handle crossfire so if later down the track when you get your new combo you can just chuck another 5770 in there and it wont bottleneck anything.

Re: New card ATI or nVidia?

Alright, I have never shopped with NCIX but I'll look into it later tonight, but I have noticed (especially with the PowerColor cards) that there are 850MHz and 875MHz versions. Here Powercolor Radeon HD 5770 850MHZ 1GB 4.8GHZ GDDR5 DVI HDMI VGA DIRECTX11 PCI-E Video Card - DirectCanada
and here Powercolor Radeon HD 5770 PCs 875MHZ 1GB 4.9GHZ GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI DP DIRECTX11 PCI-E Video Card - DirectCanada . Is it worth it to get the 875MHz?
Also, I have never bought PowerColor. I don't mind trying different brands and I do like the lowest price, but to me that is sort of suspicious. Anyone have experience with PowerColor, what sort of quality is it compared to like EVGA or Diamond?

Re: New card ATI or nVidia?

The PCS version is factory overclocked and have a slightly better cooler than the standard version.

I've had Powercolor cards and never had any issues, I've been happy with them. Considered the PCS+ version of the 5870 but went with Sapphire Vapor-X instead because the cooler was a bit better on it.

As far as I know Powercolor is one of the top brands so you don't need to worry about it.

Re: New card ATI or nVidia?

I'm gonna try to RMA my 8800 and see where it goes from there. The 5770 sounds good, but because I should RMA with no problem I just ordered mobo/cpu/ram. I heard the 8800 should work a bit better with a quad core so I bought a 965 black system with a crossfire ready board for a possible 2x 5770.

2 5770's performs about the same as a single 5870, at least in benchmarks, and this for a lower price.

Re: New card ATI or nVidia?

Good to hear you might get a new card without having to spend as much money! If the RMA doesn't work out I would go with the 5770. I have one from HIS with a non reference cooler and it is very nice!

Re: New card ATI or nVidia?

Yep 5770 is one of the best price vs performance cards out. For folks that can go 300usd, the 5850 is great. Particularly if you OC it with MSI's Afterburner.
