need advice upgrading RAM
Hello all
I'm thinking about upgrading the RAM on my computer. I have a MS 7502 MB with currently 3 Gb (2x 512@333, 2x1024@333), and I'm aiming for 4Gb I would prefer kingston since it's supplied by our local dealer.According to the site these are the choices Kingston Technology Company - Kingston Memory Search - Search Results for: Any idea what the best value for money is? If I understood correctly, I always need to pair them up ? I have a lot of problems with the game Empire : total war. While many other players have the same issue, I think it might be because I'm rather low on ram. Other spects Q6600 275GTX896 Thanks, John |

Re: need advice upgrading RAM
In all likelihood it's not the quantity of your RAM at fault - 2GB is more than enough for the majority of gamers. It's not until you start cranking up large quantities of memory-hungry applications that you'll need to look to increasing the quantity.
Also, bear in mind that 32-bit operating systems are not compatible with more than 3.25GB (approx) RAM so if you do decide to go with more RAM you'll also need to get a 64-bit operating system if you're not already running one. This will require a reformat regardless of the OS you're changing to as you can't upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS. If you have the retail version of Vista (Premium upwards) or Win7 (Premium upwards) then you'll have a 64-bit disc and compatible serial number in your box.

Re: need advice upgrading RAM
Hi
I don't think a jumb from 3GB to 4Gb would make a good difference, have you tried another games ?? FYI , you don't need pair of them , it is just recommended as to obtain the maximum performacne for each CPU (for example , C2D and C2Q operates on dual channel while i7/i5 on triple). I prefer Kingston too becasue they are cheap and have long warranty (Here 5 years but it should be lifetime I know) .To choose ,Some people prefer higher frequencies 800>667 while otheres prefer low latency CL5>CL6 but you could go either as the impact on the system is almost neglicible in both cases IMO.

Re: need advice upgrading RAM
Don't bother
"Insufficient memory" & "CTD" - workaround - Total War Center Forums See also, Anantech's "A messy transition" articles: A Messy Transition: Practical Problems With 32bit Addressing In Windows - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News A Messy Transition (Part 2): Windows XP, Vista, and the 2GB Barrier - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News A Messy Transition (Part 3): Vista Buys Some Time - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News If you have a 32 bit operating system, then upgrading from 3GB to 4 will not make much more memory usable, only getting to abot 3.25GB Additionally, the 2GB virtual space limit takes effect even with 2GB of real memory (possibly with less, but performance would be crippled by swapping). As the forum link states, switching to the large address patch version is all that is needed if you have a 64 bit OS, as 32 bit apps running in 64 have access to a full 4GB virtual space. For a 32bit OS, you have to adjust the Userva - not much info on Win7, but ist seems that it may be the same way as for Vista

Re: need advice upgrading RAM
I currently have a win vista 32OS.
I have done the workaround for the insufficient video memory, and it did stop these caches. However I still get "random" CTD's. It's really awe full, I'm not talking about one crash every 2 hours, I'm talking about one somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes ! It's unplayable. this is the only game in my collection that refuses to work properly I have contacted the tech department of the developer, in vain. I looked on the forums, never got a fix... I'm sure that there are other players like me with the same issue's... But there are also players who don't have any issue's at all. Some people even claim never to have had even a single one. What I did was to increase the memory by bcdedit /set increaseuserva 3072 , in the hope that somehow the random crashes would be fixed by it. Since the amount is as large as my entire RAM capacity, I tough my system perhaps needed even more RAM to stock this shit in. The game in question is indeed poorly coded and ill tested, but unfortually sowhat the only game of 18th century warfare available (the market of these games is rather thin. The only alternative of this is to play cossacks european wars from 2001) If however adding more RAM will not solve the issue, I probably won't get any. If anybody has any idea why this game wouldn't work on my PC, feel free to reply in this threat. Thank you for your time anyway. John |

Re: need advice upgrading RAM
May be worth tweaking the userva down a bit - going the full 3GB for that starves system space down to 1GB, and that can trigger severe instability - 2500 seems to be the commonly used figure.
The motherboard model sounds like Medion, and if you got a 64 bit restore/swapover disk with it, then it may be worth biting the bullet and switching, though it means starting from scratch.

Re: need advice upgrading RAM
imo first step is moving to 64bit OS..... otherwise it's pointless...
