New Rig, Need UPS

Hi guys,

I have a new rig and I'm planning on buying a UPS. I dunno a thing about UPS, so I need some advice.

Here is my rig:
i7 930 @2.8 Ghz
Flaming Blade GTI X58
G Skill 6Gb
HD 5850 iCooler V
WD 1TB
PC Power & Cooling 750 watt
LG optical drive
Xigmatek Utgard

What are the things I should know before buying UPS? What kind of UPS do I need for this rig?

Suggestions are much appreciated...

Re: New Rig, Need UPS

I reckon you mean a PSU.
First of all, what is wrong with the one you have? 750W should be enough to power your system. As far as I know, PC Power and Cooling make decent quality PSU's...

@Neshi: No, I do mean UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). You know, that heavy thing that provides emergency power to the PC when the input power source fails. It also provides instantaneous or near-instantaneous protection from input power interruptions. Usually UPS uses batteries that need to be charged first.

Re: New Rig, Need UPS

You'll probably want a small one that you can plug your plugs directly into like this one from ebuyer (though you might want a higher wattage).

Re: New Rig, Need UPS

Stick to APC UPSes

And i'd suggest nothing lower then a 750 or 900va....

The 1500VA LCD from APC is pretty damn amazing...

Considering everything i've plugged into that sucker..... works amazingly well, for a decent duration.

Agreed. However, I would bypass the lower end ES series, and go straight to the line the 1500VA LCD is in: the RS BR1xxx line (Staples, in Canada, sells them as the BX1xxx). The reason? Automatic Voltage Regulation. Not only do you get the benefit of a battery backup and surge protector, but a unit that has AVR also regulates the voltage coming into the UPS so that it's consistent. If it drops, the UPS compensates, and it does this without switching to the battery thereby preserving the life of the battery itself. With the ES series the UPS does this correction by switching to the battery, which eats up it's life expectancy.

In my case I have the older Back-UPS XS 1200VA, a unit only sold through Staples at the time. It was the best purchase I ever made, and the AVR has saved my equipment countless times. I even have a 2nd unit on my home theatre.
