The missing PSU spec.....

Cable length!!!

My Antec 180 series case needs a new PSU.... the True Power 430 I had in my Gunmetal went POP the other night and needs to be replaced. Going through ads for various supply's comes up with all kinds of specs except a very important one... Length of the ATX and 12V cables.

Being a bottom mounted PSU and the AsRock mobo has the power connectors at the very top the 430's 21 inches was just enough with no breathing room so 21" plus would be great but nothing I've seen even gives this length as a specification.

I won't need any more than 500-600W and COST is very important! so before anybody plays "fanboy" about their favorite brand without knowing if the cables are sufficiant and cost is out of this world (I live in a very poor world) I will find out where you live

This is for the "Manna from Heaven" system, BTW, and everything is fine other than the PSU.... I have run it with a SuperMicro 465 that I have as a spare since this happened but that supply has to sit on top of the case because it's for top mount or server case use and has very short ATX/12v cables.

I would prefer to not spend $30+ on extension cables when there are some suitable PSU's available for a little more than twice that, and I'm also not interested in running short cables across the top of the Mobo.

Newegg has a "shell shocker" special coming up this afternoon for an Antec neo ECO 520C at a very good price, if I can get in on time (limited supply, yadda yadda) is there any reason to not consider this supply?

Re: The missing PSU spec.....

A 21" ATX cable... yeah, I don't think there is one.

If, however, I'm wrong about this please do tell me the name of the PSU. I can only hide two power cables in the RV02 - the ATX and the 8-pin m/b connector (of which I do not know the name).

Re: The missing PSU spec.....

Not sure what your upper limit $$ wise for a PSU is, but there is the Corsair VX450 on New egg for $64.99
Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

It has LONG cables as was mentioned in the JONNYGURU test:
Quote:
... As we can see here, the cables are very long. Typically we see 550MM cables, and that's ok 98% of the time. Sometimes we're cursed with 500MM cables. But Corsair went with 610MM and longer cables for the VX450W. ...

That cooler master has crappy reviews, Judas, not that reviews are everything but I'ma gonna steer clear of that one.....

Corsair looks okay, Old Buzzard....... More than the Antec Neo they are blowing out this afternoon, but reasonable......... My comment about the extension cables was that the, main power + 12v CPU power + Shipping = more than I want to spend for some wires. Be it $30 or even $25 it's not worth it....... I've got wire, connectors, and 40+ years of soldering experience if it comes down to it. I'd just rather not go that route.

If it's anything at all.

I've been using Coolermaster 500watt A3 psu's in EVERY single one of my machines..... when the cosair and antecs and sparkle PSU's fail.. the coolermasters continue on.

I've had 2 DOA and 2 that have continued to work even though the fans have seized solid (work great passively mind you a wee bit on the warm side personally)...

That's considering the near 150+ of them that have passed through my hands...

Any other one that has died is due to USER error or sevear lightning strikes and even then.. they have done their jobs and saved the remaining components...

When i got the massive rig assembled..... i used 2 of the coolermasters to power the sucker when the corsair 1000HX was having a fit and the OCZ PSU's i had wouldn't push it...

And the Coolermaster 500watt i've had have always managed to push an average of 450-500watts on the 12v rails ALONE (50-150 watts beyond their spec) for hours at a time.

They are the CHEAPEST yet most reliable and able to do their REAL rating and beyond ..... other psu's just can't touch them in the same price range i find.

Re: The missing PSU spec.....

Of course I trust your judgement, Judas, I know you wouldn't recommend what you don't use. My point was the reviews were bad, a lot of RMA's going on, and customer support from cooler master making a bunch of excuses....... Where as the Corsair and Antec reviews were all happy campers.

Maybe newegg got a bad batch, even if CM makes good on them all I don't need the hassle and the return shipping costs......

Still a few hours before that "shell shocker" deal comes around, I hate being poor but cost/quality needs to be part of this....... at least I'm not planning on a generic no name brand.

Re: The missing PSU spec.....

I've used Corsiar, Zalman, Antec, Seasonic and CoolerMaster. All great product lines pretty much just choose your poison between those brands IMHO. The last PSU I had fail on me was a Logisys which I knew was going to fail sooner or later. But the PC it was running wasn't anything important so I just let go until it gave up.

The one I have that is currently out of commision is my Seasonic for my HTPC but I think that is entirely because I am running too much stuff on it. I'm heading to the local brick and mortar this afternoon (they finally decided to start directly competing with newegg on some things and really drive down prices on some stuff.

Re: The missing PSU spec.....

Well since nobody had anything bad to say about the Antec Neo Eco 520C I couldn't pass on that deal and went for it as soon as it came online...... Will see how it goes from there.

With manufacturers rebate it was $29.99 and free shipping.
