cd drive will not boot a windows os disc

I am trying to re-install my xp home premium to my Dell Dimension 4600. I put in the cd and rebooted with f12 and selected "boot from cd" It just goes back to rebooting from HD normal. I have tried another Dell os disc with same results and even changed out the cd with another one but not sure if it is a good one. I then dissembled the drive and cleaned it. I can open other cd's like music, etc. just fine. I tried to boot a Hiren's boot disc with the same results. It's like it doesn't have boot capabilities. In setup it is listed as a boot device. What can I do now? Thanks.

Re: cd drive will not boot a windows os disc

Some boot Cd's needs to be activated by key stroke... Usually you see message "pres any key to boot from CD" do you get this type of message when you try to boot from the CD? If you don't then the drive some how can't read the CD's ...

yes, I get that message with same results. Thanks for your reply, but I have been told that just because the cd is listed as a boot device that it does not always mean it is. I need to know how to verify the boot ability of the cd drive in bios or whereever

It's not really a solution to your problem but if you can get into Windows then you can start the installation from there, regardless of whether it's a bootable disc.

Re: cd drive will not boot a windows os disc

Let's make one thing sure... When you got the message "pres any key to boot" did you pres some random key in the keyboard? if you did then some how the key stroke wasn't registered by the bootloader. I have wireless keyboard and mouse. I have to turn legacy USB keyboard and mouse support on in the BIOS so that I can activate the boot loader. It sounds to me that the boot loader don't some how get the "order" to boot from CD at all...
