Re: sapphire x1950 pro

Well, sounds to me like it's just to old and tired hardware to handle those games. The x1950 is 4 years old and you're trying to play new games on it.

Same with your CPU really.

The only thing you can really do is to set the lowest settings, run at a lower resolution and perhaps turn off some non-essential services in windows. If that's what you've done already then, well the only advice I can give is to upgrade. Sad to say it.

Re: sapphire x1950 pro

The AGP version of the x1950 isn't as powerful as the PCI-E version, though, as Liqourice said, that card is quite old now and will have a tough time playing modern games like the ones you listed.
It was a great graphics card in its day but for games in today's standards, AGP cards can't really cope.

Re: sapphire x1950 pro

you can try and overclock the card and your CPU a little bit to help cope with the performance, but like others have said, it's not really worth it.

i have similar hardware to you (p4 3.2Ghz, 2GB RAM, Radeon 3650 1GB), and i don't play games anymore because all of today's games aren't really playable. the last game i can say that was decently playable was Dark Messiah. and that game is like 3 years old already.

Re: sapphire x1950 pro

as previously stated, the x1950 is a PCI-E card but it has been converted to AGP by the manufacturer. So, that may be the reason why you see the PCI-E logo on there.

if you want better performance, you're going to essentially do a full system build if you get a new video card. getting a new video card for better performance means a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, and most likely a new PSU as well.

most powerful AGP card is the ATI 3650 1GB, which I have now .

kinda useless though because you can't get full performance out of the card due to the lacking CPU performance.

Re: sapphire x1950 pro

Yes, it's a waste of money to get a newer AGP card. Better spent on a completely new system.

Re: sapphire x1950 pro

A 4350 isn't much of a gaming card, it's more geared towards HTPC's. It has lower Pixel and Texture fill rates than the 1950 so honestly, I think it will perform worse than your old card.

You need to step up to at least a 4750. Don't know enough about what nvidia card that would be a good alternative.

Re: sapphire x1950 pro

I'd say no, it's not what you're looking for. The least I'd recommend when it comes to a 5-series card is a 5670, which basically is the same as a 4770 performance wise, but if you can manage somehow to get the extra cash your money is better spent on a 5770.

Problem is, even if the 1950 is 4 years old it was the absolute high end back then so to get something thats new and perform a bit better you need to go to the higher mid-range cards.

Re: sapphire x1950 pro

with the NVIDIA offerings, nothing less than a used 8800GT/GTS 512MB or a 9800GT/GTX 512MB is where you need to be at.

then, you have the GTX 2xx series and the latest GTX 4xx series of cards in which i'm pretty much lost with as i have been out of the loop of since december 2008 (i used to work for EVGA).

but, what i can tell you though is that a GTX 260 core 216 is also a sweet spot and it offers a pretty big difference in performance compared to that of the 8800GT/GTX and 9800GT/GTX i just mentioned.

Re: sapphire x1950 pro

My dad's got a 9600GT, which is from when they were still pretty new (cost about £120) and the 9800GX2 at the time (if memory serves) was the dog's 'nads.
It went with a P4 3.2GHz PC and still quite happily plays all of his games at full whack at 1680x1050.

As long as you're not planning on playing Crysis you should get almost any game running smoothly at a decent graphics setting.
