PSU safe for GTS250?
hey dudes, my bredren picked up a HP 6-core phenom system. The PSU is rated to 300w and was wondering if it was SAFE for a BFG GTS250? I was gonna sell my old one to him. That thing draws a decent amount of power but he has nothing else additional within the comp at the moment. I know some rate it at a wattage but can take more safely sometimes...

Re: PSU safe for GTS250?
If the PSU came in the PC I wouldn't risk it, personally. You don't need a butch PSU but a reliable 450-500W would be safer.

Re: PSU safe for GTS250?
When you are trying to decide if a PSU can handle a particular video card(s), the most important number is the AMPS on the +12v rail(s).
A 400W PSU with 30 amps on the +12 can actually run a higher powered vid card than a 600W with 15 AMPS on the +12.

Re: PSU safe for GTS250?
If it's the 6 core phenom i'm think of that i recently saw from hp...
nope.. the PSU is already running "underspec" ..... i think when i looked at the 12v rail on the psu it had.. it was 20amp or some rediculious low amperage like that... maybe it was 18.. but i think it was 20amp.. Either way... the user wanted to slap a video card in it and i popped a 500watt coolermaster (36amp) and a Radeon 5770 1gb

Re: PSU safe for GTS250?
personally i think HP voids it's own warranty... considering such a low spec psu driving it's components..
what really pisses me off the most is the fact that they have the gull and gonads to stick a damn 6 pin PCI-ex power connector on that psu suggesting to users they have a remote chance in hell that they'll be able to drive a video card at all.. Surfice it to say... maybe with a damn intel i3 board and the lowest ati radeon available that actually takes a 6pin connector.... but even then that's still scratching by barely.. It's a total JOKE
