Intel i7 970 - Tempting
I know it's not quite as nice as the mighty 980 but if purchased under $800.00 not too bad of a deal. I'm thinking about picking one of these up if I can convince myself. I really think once you start getting up near $900 might as well get the 980. I do quite a bit of HD encoding so it would be great for that and be the last great upgrade for my socket.
So what ya'll think? |

Isn't the 970 around $900?

I gave in. I'll be ordering the 980. I'll start a build thread tonight.
wait, i just saw you have a 920 already. What is your reasoning for going to the sexa-core?

Re: Intel i7 970 - Tempting
Personally... i see really no benefit of anything more then a 920/930 series i7.....
the performance differences in most everything is marginal when compared dollar to dollar.

Re: Intel i7 970 - Tempting
Since when did money become an issue for those looking at top of the range CPUs? I cant see anyone (home use) ever claiming a $1000 processor is good value... superb fun to use... but value isnt really an issue.

Re: Intel i7 970 - Tempting
As I stated, for those looking for a top of the range CPU they dont concern themselves with the points in your post.

i was just stating what i thought on the matter at hand.. as i too was looking at the 970/980... but i couldn't justify it at all... I simply consider the 920/930's top of the line CPU's already ...

Do allot of what I do above and get back to me on that. I may do 3-6 videos a a week so less time encoding is more time gaming. Which isn't a big deal when I'm on call but when I'm not (two weeks on, two weeks off) I like to make the best use of my time as possible. |

i wasn't stating what i said specifically at anyone... Even my sister or myself when rendering out videos and whatnot can benefit from the extra time. however from my tests.. i've seen a relatively insignificant change. Personally what i've found interesting is that i get a bigger bang out of building 2x i7 920/930 machines for near identical costs.... so you can render while you game

Re: Intel i7 970 - Tempting
Personally I would spend the extra $100-$150 and go for the 980x. That is assuming you can afford either of them. But I agree w/ Mr. Judas here. Unless it is work critical that you need the extra speed I would just go w/ another system that you use strictly for encoding. Also AFAIK x264 only supports 8 threads at the moment, and damn near every encoder out there uses the x264 engine. So if you use Handbrake, MeGUI, Ripbot264 you are barely going to gain anything by moving to a 970/980x.

Re: Intel i7 970 - Tempting
x264 does actually support more than 8 threads. It's more efficient with actual cores/threads than virtual threads though from what I've read and seen in person. I can afford either processor actually I was recently "left" some money from a family member who passed. I have looked into a building a portable gaming machine which would cost a little more than buying these processors. On the flip side prices may drop a bit when the 990 is released. Decisions, decisions!

Re: Intel i7 970 - Tempting
But if money is not an issue, why not go for the one which will give you even 1% increase in speed? It makes perfect sense.

Re: Intel i7 970 - Tempting
Well I can think of a few things I could spend the money on mainly projects around the house. The system I might build is an AMD x6 system. It would be nice to have an AMD setup again.

Re: Intel i7 970 - Tempting
Well I ordered a 980x today. It seems the prices have jumped on the 970 (don't know why) so went ahead w/ the 980.

Re: Intel i7 970 - Tempting
I just finally installed the 980x a few days ago. I know and yes I still need to reload windows too (other problem see Win7 forum).
Very fast but something quite odd w/ Realtemp my processor speed and multi keeps changing though I have the ratio (25) locked, EIST off, but the C1 state is on. I also have turbo turned off. Everything else I've ran says it's running at stock so I don't know. The other big issue is my CPU temps I thought either my MB is jacked or something. All the cores run from 23-32C. Seems awfully low to me and I was quite carefully installing the heatsink. Computer runs fine (haven't done any load testing for say yet). One last thing Noctua fans suck. The fans on my heatsink apparently started leaking that stupid oil. Luckily it appears this started happening when my case was sitting on it's side for a week. I'm running (2) Scythe Gentle Typhoons (1850rpm) on it now. |
