rolleyes Changing cpu's

I now have an Intel dual core E8500 cpu, working on a ASUS P5Q Pro Tubo MB. I want to change the cpu out to a Intel Q9550 quad cpu. The dual cpu runs 65Watts and the quad cpu uses 130 Watts. Will the MB automatically adjust this difference and is there anything else that I should look at or change with this upgrade ???????

Re: Changing cpu's

The P5Q Pro Turbo has the right socket to cater for a quad core, so the Q9550 will fit no problem.
It will be just a matter of swapping out the cpu, and you are good to go. The Motherboard will adjust its wattage automatically.

However, a new CPU is a major change in hardware and it usually needs a format. That means the OS will most likely to be re-installed, to make sure everything runs flawlessly.

Re: Changing cpu's

I'm with Neshi on this one - the motherboard does all of the work. As long as you're not using 280W of a 300W PSU you'll be fine (considering you have a 750W for your setup, you've got plenty of breathing room).
Reformatting, however, is debatable. XP always used to give me a pretty blue picture when I changed a major component in a PC. Win7, however, may be a little more kind. Best practice, yes but not necessarily required.

I would say that the best test would be to install the processor, load Windows and open up MSCONFIG. In the boot tab under "Advanced options", select the number of processors. If you can select 4, I wouldn't worry about the reformat. If it says 2, reformat.

Re: Changing cpu's

If all your doing is changing the CPU... no need to reinstall windows ... be it windows xp/vista/win7....

Just double check and make sure your bios is up to date for that cpu to work.... then swap it... fire it up and away you go.
