G'day!
I'm now looking for a new monitor as I'm passing on my 22" AOC 210v to my in-laws. I'm looking at a budget of NZ$330/150GBP/US$230. Should I be looking at higher spec 22" or a budget 23/24". I have no issues with 22" but if I can go larger without compromising quality to much then I will. Since I've now got my Radeon 5850, it should be able to handle the higher resolutions. Any suggestion? Cheers, Iain

Re: New monitor shopping
It depends on the distance you will have from the monitor and how good your eyesight is.
When I got my 24" I couldn't see that well and the extra size helped for small fonts etc. Later I had a surgery and the size became a problem. I have the monitor at arms length while I am sitting in front of it. For me it is one size too large. If I could buy a new monitor now I would get a 22 or 23 inch one. So you might want to think what I said. Also, don't forget the extra space you are going to need on the desk, if things are tight as they are now. I can't suggest a monitor since there are new models every month lol. I did start a similar thread a month or so ago in Hardware, where I mention a few monitors, you might want to check it out.

Re: New monitor shopping
Cool advice....Cheers
I think I've narrowed it down to the LG V2353W and the Samsung P2350, both 23"ers. And I've just noticed that the Samsung has no HDMI..... I'm guessing there is no real difference between HDMI and DVI-D?

Re: New monitor shopping
First of all, though this is personal, I don't trust LG monitors. I had one, just before the end of its warranty it had problems. I had it replaced with a slightly newer but almost same model for free. Good for them, but after few months of usage, problems similar to the original appeared.
They are cheap and good value for money, but I just don't trust them any more. Packard Bell, a company I never trusted for PCs, recently released 22-24inch line, called Maestro with LED backlighting (I strongly suggest you get an LED one no matter what brand), and low price. It has lots of connections, including DVI-D and HDMI, etc etc, but I have no idea how good PB monitors are. It sure looks good though. Samsung I trust, though their inability to create a good stand is...annoying. Difference between HDMI and DVI-D? Well, as far as I know HDMI can pass through audio. If you have consoles, get a monitor which has HDMI connections.

Re: New monitor shopping
Ok I've settled on the LG. I'm sure there are problems with all brands for some people (I had a Toshiba 42" LCD go up on me the other week under warranty. I've also had a samsung 17" LCD buckle out ater 4 years, luck of the draw I guess).
I was looking at the LEDs but for my price range I couldn't seem to get any better than a 5ms response. I'll probably be going with a console at some point so the HDMI will be come in handy. Cheers for the help again guys. Never falls on deaf ears!

Re: New monitor shopping
If you're going to be gaming you might want to try and stretch your budget to a TV. I found a big difference when I went from using a monitor via HDMI for my PS3 to a TV with HDMI. The monitor didn't give crisp, clear text, which was the first give-away.
It'll be beneficial in the long run because if, further down the line, you want a TV for your console you'll have to buy that separately.
