Hard Drive Issue

Windows is reporting that my drive is about to fail. I checked the SMART with HDTune and it says that my reallocated sectors count is high. It's at 127, which I don't think is that bad. I can't hear anything wrong with the hard drive. I've already backed up my data (A few weeks ago because I was planning to format anyway). Is that number too high or do I need not be concerned about it?

Re: Hard Drive Issue

If you are backed up and were planning a format, why not format and see what it says after a restore......

Re: Hard Drive Issue

Maybe it would be a good idea to use a low level format tool?

Bad sectors are a bad sign, not worth taking risk with such a drive, so if formatting doesn't help...

Can you suggest any tools? I will only have time to do this tomorrow. After that, I shall be extremely busy.

By the way, I ran a quick scan for bad sectors and it came up with nothing. I'm running a thorough scan right now.

Re: Hard Drive Issue

Use the manufactures utility....... if it's one of the WD's listed in your specs, use theirs.

Would it be worth it to get an RMA with the warranty? From what I've read, reallocated sectors cannot be fixed, and I still have 4 years left on warranty.

Re: Hard Drive Issue

Sure....... didn't know you were still under warranty. Running their tool would verify a fault though..... not sure about WD, but several years ago Seagate/Maxtor used to want the owner to run their tool before issuing a RMA.

Re: Hard Drive Issue

Never trust a HDD which shows faults. Even if you "fix" it, you are only postponing the inevitable. That's my view, get rid of it and get a new.

Re: Hard Drive Issue

If i ever see even just ONE bad sector show on a hardrive..

i bin the hardrive and get a new one..

Bad-Sectors are bad... do not play with them... they do not play nicely.. because where there is one.. there are usually many hiding in the shadows ready to rape your important files

Re: Hard Drive Issue

I'd have to agree with that. Once had a drive that got a few bad sectors. At first I just tried to lock those and it worked for a while but it didn't take much long until the entire drive failed.

Re: Hard Drive Issue

There are no BAD sectors. A scan with WD's tool and with HD Tune revealed no issues except the reallocated sectors count.
