CPU cooler for my HTPC

I need a better CPU cooler for my HTPC.

I used the Phenom II stock cooler instead of the one that came with the Athlon. In general it should be good enough and it does cool well, but I use the htpc to drive a tow truck in my fav game and then it revs up like mad to cool the cpu and it sounds absolutely horrible...

It doesn't get hotter than about 46C but the fan goes up to 5300 rpm and it just sounds like it's gonna explode any second.

So, I need a cooler that does at least as good a job at cooling but with a lot less noise. Thought about moving the H50 from my main rig to it but there's no good place to mount the rad.

Suggestions?

Re: CPU cooler for my HTPC

Depends on what the max cpu cooler height is for your case, but the Scythe Big Shuriken is decent, stands at 58mm tall and quiet even when running at full rpm.

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER DK9-7E52A-0L-GP CPU Cooler

Low profile, seems to perform about equal/slightly better than the stock Am2/Am3 cooler.

Re: CPU cooler for my HTPC

The case is high, I can use full height cards in it, so that's not an issue.

What case is it? The Scythe Ninja Mini is a good pick for HTPC cases with some room in them.

Won't the 80mm fan be a bit noisy comparet to a 120mm one?

This one does look interesting.

I need to figure out a way to push a bit more air into the case as well. There's two 120mm fans on the side pushing air out but there's no intake fan anywyere and not really any place for one either.

Re: CPU cooler for my HTPC

It is possible to use the Ninja Mini passively in the Antec Fusion if you are worried about noise. There's quite a few threads on this if you google it.

Re: CPU cooler for my HTPC

I know, it just doesn't seem to be any better really than what I have. Perhapse less noise though but if I can fit the big shuriken I still think that it's better..

Gonna try and mount a small low noise fan on the back as well to try and get a bit better airflow.
