Random freezes and graphic fails
Hi guys. Im trying to fix a friends computer. Its a year old and it has been randomly freezing since he got it.
The specs: Cpu: intel Core 2 Quad 9550 2.83 ghz Mobo: Gigabyte ep45t-extreme Ram: 8 gb kingston value 1333mhz ddr3 Psu: plazir 800w Cpu cooling: Domino A.L.C. He was running it with the Sapphire HD 4870 2gb vapor-x card but now it runs with my Asus 5770 1 gb CuCore. I have testet the Cpu on my mobo(<--se specs) with Prime95 and it ran 12 hours with no fails or errors, and it was with the stock intel cooling and it never got above 75 degree Celsious. I have testet the ram with memtest86+ and they completed 12 runs with no fail or errors. I tried putting my cpu in his mobo with his cooling etc.etc. and it ran prime95 for 10 hours with no fails or errors and max temp has 45 degree celsious. It didnt crash when i played games on it either. All this testing was with my Gfx and i have checked it still crashes when it runs with his cpu in his mobo and stuff.. He normally runs it with 3 7200rpm harddrives put all this testing has been done with onle one 500 gb wd 7200 rpm drive. (It still crashes when used.) Lately i have noticed that there have come bluring lines accross the screen when i play games on it. And the last couple of days it have freezed while loading windows and some red stripes have acured in the top of the monitor. Im accusing the Psu because it doesnt crash when my cpu is in his computer and im thinking its because it draws less power. Guys can you help me? ![]() If you want to know more information please ask!

Re: Random freezes and graphic fails
Looks like you are taking the right steps when troubleshooting. And as you have already suspected, it probably is the PSU. If possible, test your friends's PC with another PSU (preferably a reputable one).

Re: Random freezes and graphic fails
I'd suspect the PSU too.
His system + your CPU + your GPU works. That pretty much leaves us with bad CPU, bad GPU insufficiently powerful PSU. His CPU works in your PC so it should be fine; system behaving badly even with your GPU suggests that his GPU isn't the cause (at least not the only one); that makes the PSU very suspicious.

Re: Random freezes and graphic fails
Yours is a decent quality 500W, it's going to work fine.

![]() This is why i love these forums.. You can try as many things as you want alone, but a second or third opinion always helps

Re: Random freezes and graphic fails
Guys one little problem.. The gigabyte ep45t-extreme needs a 24pin plus a 8 pin connector. And the only 8 pin connector on my psu is a pci-e connector can it be used? I have a molex to 6 pin converter that came with the gfx i can use to power the 5770

Re: Random freezes and graphic fails
I don't think they're the same configuration so you won't fit it in there at all.

Re: Random freezes and graphic fails
The board will work fine with just a 4-pin 12V connector, a full 8-pin connector is only required for Extreme Edition 130W CPUs (I checked the manual
). There should be only one way to connect the 4-pin 12V plug and it's to the upper part of the connector on the motherboard if I'm not mistaking.

Re: Random freezes and graphic fails
A little update on the subject
Im dedicating most os this weekend to testing this computer again. So far i have tested all 4 sticks of ram and all 4 ram slots individually with memtest 86+ and they all passed 3 runs or more with out any errors or crashes. So far soo good. But the i noticed a damage on one of the ram sticks.http://img502.imageshack.us/i/27112001.jpg/ http://img593.imageshack.us/i/27112002.jpg/ http://img13.imageshack.us/i/27112003g.jpg/ http://img201.imageshack.us/i/27112004.jpg/ http://img192.imageshack.us/i/27112010.jpg/ http://img140.imageshack.us/i/271120011.jpg/ http://img828.imageshack.us/i/271120101.jpg/ ![]() ![]() The Ram stick didnt come up with an error in memtest, but could it be some what unstable?

Re: Random freezes and graphic fails
torture testing all the way here.. I needed a way to push everything in the computer to 100% usage at once, so now im running furmark at 1280x1024(screen resolution) 8x mssa samples and prime95 at the same time.
![]() the hole system only draws 220 watt!! this is with 4 blocks of ddr3 ram.. But i guess only 2 are being used as it running on a 32 bit win 7 system.. This is only while im trying to find the problem.. My hd 5770 runs at 79 degrees C with fans manualy set to 100% and my core 2 duo runs at 44 degrees C. |
