Smilie Suggest a new monitor for me please?

:: UPDATE: 21st November ::
After some discussion and narrowing down, I've added a poll.
Please vote and reply to say why.
Thank you!

Hello. I've recently moved my computer from the dining room table (don't ask!) to a proper computer desk. This is good because it's not in the way, but the screen is further away and it's not as easy to see.

My current monitor is a 17" Asus MM17T Silver TFT Monitor. I've had it quite a long time and it's seen various coatings of dust, cat wee, coke, and other such mess. However it works fine! Just that it's small! [link]

I've taken the liberty of taking a photo and writing measurements on, to save typing a longwinded and confusing explanation. This is where the monitor will be:

Sorry for any mess/bad paint skillz.

At the moment, price doesn't matter. All that matters is size and quality. As you can see, my tiny 17" monitor is looking a bit lost in that big space, so a replacement is well-needed.

Specs are on my profile, if that makes any difference.

Links to preferably UK websites are appreciated.

If you don't know any, scan.co.uk is usually a good place to start.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

Since money is not an issue:
Eh, how big do you want the monitor to be? Yes I can see the photo, but how big do you want the monitor to be? 17"? 19"? 22"? 25" ?
Are you willing to wait for HDMI 1.4 monitors or 1.3 is fine with you? Connections needed/wanted? Native resolution? Are you going to upgrade your system soon? Do you plan on mainly play games, watch movies, other?

Do you want/mind if it is a TV-Monitor?

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

Are monitor sizes measured diagonally from corner to corner, or width-wise? I just want it to be as big as possible without being too big for the hole. My brother has a LG M228WDP 22" and it fit fine. He said there wasn't much room for bigger, but I think he might just be saying that cos he doesn't want me to have a bigger monitor than him.

If worst comes to worse, I could always bring it forward from the hole a bit, if it didn't fit INSIDE the gap.

I don't know what 1.4 and 1.3 HDMI are. I just want it in time for Christmas.

And a TV Monitor is fine, but not a must have. It will never be used as a telly. It will be used for playing games and browsing the internet. Videos are never watched on here, save for the occasional youtube..

my current resolution is 1280 x 1024.

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

they are measured diagonally but I do believe it is just the screen that is measured and it would also be in the monitor aspect ratio which most have a 16:9 i believe now

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

Width looks like your biggest restriction. Pythag reveals that:

-For a 16:10 monitor, the width is 0.872 times the stated diagonal dimension.

-For a 16:9 monitor, the width is 0.848 times the stated diagonal dimension.

Remember that this covers only the flat panel itself, so leave room for the bit around the edge :P

When it comes to features and which monitor to go for, we really need answers to Bluemak's questions to give a reasonable answer.

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

My monitor is "technically" 25.5 inches. Measurement wise, that's 28" diagonally, less than 16" tall, and just over 23.5" wide. That's bezel (frame) edge to edge. 'Course, that doesn't include the stand, however. If I did, since my stand is height adjustable my monitor sits about 22.5" tall (dead centre height wise).

In your case you might be stretching it if you get a 24" monitor, even a 23". Normally a 24" monitor runs just shy of 22" wide, or as much as 23", and about 16" +\- tall (not including stand), and since most 23" monitors use the same bezel, they too can vary from 22" to 23" wide. As I said, it can all depend on the bezel (frame). Given that most 22" monitors sit in the 20" +/- wide, 13-15" tall range, you should be good with that size.

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

Babylen - you have to bear in mind that the screen size is measured diagonally - the monitor itself isn't measured at all. Chances are you'd only be able to fit 22" in there. Monitors are also widescreen so you need to take into consideration that you're not measuring at 45 degrees.
This monitor has a good review and is from a reputable company who are renound for making decent-quality monitors.
You may also like to take the Asus VG236 into consideration as it seems to be HH's screen of choice for 3D.

Thanks for the link. One worry though: will the step down in brightness from 400 to 300 cd/m2 be noticable?

Apparently it measures up as follows:
Dimensions W x H x D (including stand) : 20.33"(51 cm) x 18.14"(46 cm)x 7.64"(19 cm)

Perfect fit. If it's an inch or so too big, like I said, I can always bring it forward a bit sitting just infront of the hole.

Plenty of time to choose one though so not gonna plump for the first recommendation just yet.

Eh, how big do you want the monitor to be? The replies in this thread have led me to choose 22".
Are you willing to wait for HDMI 1.4 monitors or 1.3 is fine with you? Depends what that means. Either's fine so long as it's available to order in time for Christmas, but 1.4 or 1.3 doesn't make much difference to me.
Connections needed/wanted?
Uhm, I don't know. As far as I'm aware I can cater for all.
Native resolution? It's currently 1280x1024. That's max. Is that restricted by my monitor or my graphics card? It's fine as it is but wouldn't complain if it was higher.
Are you going to upgrade your system soon? No. Can't afford to!
Do you plan on mainly play games, watch movies, other? Playing games - notably counterstrike source and football manager 2011. Neither are particularly graphics heavy but obviously I want them to look as sharp and crisp as possible.

I hope this is enough info? Sorry for being an ubernoob.

Do you want/mind if it is a TV-Monitor?

At the bottom of that page is a link to the Viewsonic VX2250WM LED monitor that is just a buck, er.. Euro.. Pound.. whatever or so more. Anyone have experience with that one? The only possible downside to it is that it's a TN panel.

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

I don't trust LG for monitors (plenty of personal bad experience with them), but if you go for an LG, that is a very good monitor for the money.

Does SONY make monitors any more of 24" or smaller?

Yeah, good thing he didn't do this in the 580 review thread. People would jump on him as an AMD saboteur.

Sorry to continue off topic, but wth is up with that? "Omg your reviews don't say what I was hoping that they would say, therefore you lie and are in some way biased/retarded..."

Uhm that one seems to be more expensive purely for 3D, but I don't really need that. At all, in fact.

Actually, a 120Hz monitor is a great choice for gaming even if you are not interested in the so called 3D gaming.
As long as the system can handle it, you will be having much smoother experience. I know that I want my next monitor to be a 120Hz monitor even though I have no interest in "3D" gaming.

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

There's the 3D screens Stu uses as well: Scan.co.uk: 23" Asus 3D Monitor & NVIDIA 3D Vision Glasses - VG236H

They come with NVIDIA 3D Vision glasses too, so you could find out what your missing or flog them.

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

I think a 9800GT could manage it. Though, I'm curious why you would upgrade your monitor before a graphics card, considering the current market for VGA's is fierce and consumer-friendly, while the monitor market seems more stagnant. That is, of course, working under the assumption you're a big gamer

My vote is for the ASUS combo. I use one of their monitors (24" 1080p) and it works wonderfully -- though I have yet to test out a 120hz version, it looks to be very similar.

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

yup.. 22" is about as big as your going to get..

my 23" samsung however is 21.5" wide and 16" tall

it's 2048x1152 as well ... vga and dvi... 50,000:1 contrast ratio.. it's a rev4

the rev 5's are saposed to be 100,000:1 and the rev6 is claimed to be LED backlit for 3,000,000:1

Beautiful monitor imo

2343BWX Samsung http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/de...l_name=2343BWX

Re: Suggest a new monitor for me please?

My parents are getting impatient now.

How is this one: Acer H243HXBBMIDCZ 24 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor With HDMI And Webcam - Computing at Play.com (UK)? A little wide at 22.66" but it would do. How are the specs, for the price?

I've been thinking - 3D would completely wasted on me. I don't want 3D specifically.

So let's get cracking...

Now remember the main use of my monitor is counterstrike. Would there be noticable difference between a response time of 5ms and 2ms?

Because there's this: Samsung SM2494HM 24 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor With HDMI - Monitors at Play.com (UK) for a lot cheaper. Don't want it if it's crap though...

I've read bad things about Samsung prodcuts from Play.com - with them getting European ones as opposed to UK ones so the plugs don't work... Hmm.

So I looked at Scan.co.uk and it's a pretty poor show, I'd say. Plus the website suxxxx.

Next up, ebuyer: ASUS VG236HE/23 W LCD 1080P 2ms 16:10 Contrast Ratio.. | Ebuyer.com <--Whaddya think of that? Sounds good to me, but I'm no expert.

Or this one from misco: HP ZR24w 24 Wide LCD TFT Monitor - Misco.co.uk Any good?

Found a few on overclockers...

Asus VG236HE 23" TRUE 120Hz 3D Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black []

LG W2363D 23" TRUE 120Hz 3D Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black []

Acer GD245HQ 23.6" 120Hz 3D Widescreen LCD Monitor (ET.UG5HE.004) - Black [ET.UG5HE.004]

They're all 3D though and would be wasted. "Future-proof" though...

Sorry for all the links!

I like one so much I seem to have posted it twice, haha. I guess I'm rooting for the ASUS VG236HE.

I'd appreciate it if you could look at them and comment and/or recommend something else for no more than £350 inc VAT & shipping.

Thank you!

What kind of TV broadcast is there? Analog? DVB-T?

If it is the latter you might as well get one of these instead...

anysee E30 - Terrestrial (DVB-T), Free To Air.
