i am about to format my external HDD but there is an option that i dont understand which is the allocation of units what should i set it to because all that shall be on the HDD is my games and a few files

I usually have it at 4096.

Oh, something else, if you plan on placing large files on it (several GBs), then make sure you have both 64bit OS and you format the drive in NTFS and not FAT32.

btw, no matter what, if it is a large drive (for example 2TB) be prepared for many hours of formatting. Some say it could reach a full day of formatting.

thats is all i needed to hear i have windows 7 64 bit and the games dont usually take over more than 5 gig anyway and the HDD is only 250 gig but i want to upgrade my laptop one to a 2 tb drive but alas no money i am broke at the moment because of christmas lol but thanks for the help it was very helpful

One more thing, what I mentioned about large files, I meant individual files of GBs in size, not just total number of size occupied by (for example) a game.
Since you already have 64bit OS, just make sure you format the drive in NTFS and you will be set for everything.
