Power Supply good enough?

Sorry guys if i sound like a noob.

I have a question about my power supply.

I have an Energon 750 watt power supply. It has four 12 volt rails, each rated at 20 amps. The 480 requires 42 amps (That's what i have heard, but does it really use 500 watts? I thought it only used about 400 watt.)
Anyway, will my powersupply be able to run it? Will the two rails be able to handle the load, or is there a way to make use of a third rail?

Thanks

Re: Win An NVIDIA GTX 480 with ASUS @ HH

This is not the place to ask this question, but the answer to the question is yes, your PSU will be able to run it without any problems. You can even run a GTX480 from a good quality 550W PSU... 750W is almost enough for 2xGTX480. Almost.

Eh, 4 12 volt rails each at 20 amps? 4 rails? It doesn't sound like it can take it. I am not an expert on PSUs so I would ask in the proper section of the forum (not this one!).

It's normal for a 750W PSU to have 4 rails of 20A each. And those 20A are not really available from all those rails. Combined, it should only be able to give you around 60A (720W for the combined +12V rail), a far cry from the 80A that the arithmetic sum would give you.

If it was 80A total then the power rating of the PSU should've been around 1000W, 80A * 12V = 960W.

As I said, you can run ONE GTX480 without any problems, you can even overclock it to the extreme. Check to see the actual distribution of the cables on the different rails if you can and use the ones that aren't shared if you want absolute peace of mind.

Other possibilities: SLI 2xGTX470 and SLI 2xGTX570. Yes, with a 750W PSU.

What brand and model is your PSU?

Re: Power Supply good enough?

The power supply is an Energon 750 watt (Very low quality, can be bought online for less than 100$)

I have no idea what cables are for which rails.
The system is custom build, but i don't have the manual because i didn't build it myself. I can't find the manufacturers website, so no help there either.

I'm planning on getting a new power supply in the next week or month.

I won the 480 in the competition on this website

I'm planning on getting a new power supply in the next week or month, but i want to use it now (arriving tomorrow)

Anyways, i just want to know if my power supply will run it well and not damage it. If i don't get any problems, i might just keep it.

Well...the chances of damaging it are slim. If I were you and not sure, I would wait.

Unknown brand, no active PFC, no 80+ certificate, build by Andertek. As reference, the 650w version of the same psu is build by CWT which is pretty good manufacturer. It should be fine till you get your new psu, but don't overlook it even if everything seems to be ok. Congrats btw.

Just for some clarification, thought it may no longer be needed...

The 480 uses a little over 300W on its own. Obviously the rest of the system consumes some power too.

The various connectors on a PSU are split between the different rails. As the 480 is getting it's power from the pci-e socket (up to 75W) and the multiple power cables connected to the PSU, there's no need for all the power to be on one rail. A single rail PSU, is, however, often preferrable as it makes everything simple in this regard

I haven't had the time to order anything yet, but hopefully i'll order today. I think i'll be ordering a Phantom (black one) instead of the 690, a CPU cooler (stock cooler is loud!) and a power supply of course.

For the CPU cooler, what do you recommend? Is a Noctua NH-D14 a bit overkill for a 955 @ 4.0 ghz? The motherboard manual, says it's 140 watt CPU ready, but is that enough? BTW it's a Gigabyte MA770T UD3P.

Re: Power Supply good enough?

The NH-D14 is probably the best air cooler you can buy today, and yet it's not overkill at all. A good cooler is an investment, you'll get to reuse it over the years. And with their 6 yrs warranty what better investment then Noctua?

The NH-D14 is as top-of-the-line as you can go for air coolers, really. I would also recommend checking out Corsair's H50 and H70 water/air hybrid coolers, which are really wonderful.

Also...pix!

Hi guys.

I just got my cooler, powersupply and case, but unfortunately i'll have to RMA the case

This is why

[IMG][/IMG]

I guess the mailman dropped it just outside my house, because he said the sidewalk was slippery

Anyways, i installed the cooler and the powersupply in my old case, and it's running fine so far. The cooler was a bit hard to install, due to no cable management in the case.

I think i'll have to wait another week or two to get a new case

Do you think i could fix it with some pliers and a hammer? I'm not really sure because the metal is thick! I've got no idea how this could've happened, the box is almost undamaged and there is only a little hole in a corner.

Damn, that's ugly

Didn't it have any protection inside the box? I know that my Corsair cases are always 'suspended' inside styrofoam end caps.

Yes, it had a lot protection. But i don't think it got damaged under shipping, because the box was almost undamaged. I think it got assembled wrong or something.

It's just sad to have to wait a couple of weeks before i get a new one

Re: Power Supply good enough?

My dad got some car mechanic to fix the case and i'm actually pretty surprised. I don't want to return it now

If you still want some pics, tell me.

I'm moving on to overclocking now, so i'll make a new thread

Yeah, probably dropped at the factory, and someone didn't want to be blamed, so (s)he just put it in the box

Waiting is a bitch. I know, as I'm having to wait until NEXT MONTH to build my new system, as I won't have the $$ to get the CPU and memory until then

Glad to see in your next post, that it got 'fixed'. Sometimes all it needs is a BFH, but not all of us have them available
