Smilie Compaq Presario SR1130

Hello all I am somewhat computer literate no pro like most of the members on this site my issue other than it being a Compaq, I am installing a WD 160 sata hd drive my bios are current and my os is xp pro the mb is not recognizing the new drive I appoligize to all this might just be a stupid question but any help would greatly be appreciated am builing this for my daughter it is up and running with a ide hd

You didn't provide a lot of information, unfortunately. Anyway...assuming your laptop supports SATA2 (which I'm assuming it does), then the issue is probably that the drive is not formatted.

What you will need to do is, after uninstalling the current drive and installing the WD, put in the Windows OS install/boot disc. Follow the instructions. It will format, partition, and install Windows onto the new HD. Most hard drives nowaday come "blank" with nothing usable on them -- they need to be partitioned into usable storage space, which is what the Windows OS disc will do for you.
