Re: cpu cooler AMD
The Noctua is excellent, but is it the best choice for you? In your place, I would get the cheaper hyper 212+, and if possible get the 1055t cpu instead.

Re: cpu cooler AMD
I can't afford the extra money for the 1055t
is the 212+ really much better than the stock cooler though |

Re: cpu cooler AMD
Yeah, it is.
If you are in Northern hemisphere, you could use the 1055t with the stock cooler for the time being, while ambient temperatures are still low. Otherwise just stick with your initial cpu choice and get the after market coolers. |

Re: cpu cooler AMD
Aren't you limited to the 5450 for hybrid crossfire? The chart I found on AMD's site doesn't even show that chipset yet.
It's still a good motherboard one way or the other. |

idk maybe its just an older technology that they haven't updated the pages for since the combining of ati and AMD. but I really like the MB and it isn't to crazy expensive

Re: cpu cooler AMD
Hyper 212+ is a good cooler, I've got one on a Phenom II 555 black with unlocked cores and it's staying cool. The Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 pro is a good cooler too, Newegg has a good price on those too at the moment. Hyper is direct contact heat pipe.... you may have to use more grease that you're used to (filling the gaps) but it works well.

I like the freezer 7 pro I think I will go with that unless someone has a good comparison for it and the 212+

Re: cpu cooler AMD
I may "upgrade" my Phenom II X4 to the freezer 7 pro, and use the Hyper on my Athlon II (which is the CPU I bought it for.) They are about the same but I've used the Freezer 7 on a lot of systems and like it a lot.

Re: cpu cooler AMD
Pretty sure I saw somewhere that the Freezer 7 Pro fouls the motherboard heatsinks, though maybe bending or trimming some fin edges would make it fit.
The heatsinks on this motherboard are LARGE!

Re: cpu cooler AMD
I think either will do the job, Freezer 7 has a quieter fan in my opinion....... If I don't like it I can switch....... (I'm just trying to talk myself into getting rid of the AMD cooler that now resides on the Athlon II
)

Re: cpu cooler AMD
I ordered the arctic freezer 7 pro and I know their fans are pretty darn quiet which is why i leaned to it and because i saw several reviews of the 212+ that said it was pretty loud

Now the big question is: Are you going to be doing any overclocking, or will you be running at stock speeds? I ask this because, unlike the Intel, the stock Phenom II HSFs are more than good enough to cope with no OCing, and even some light OCing. Take a few minutes to read the reviews of the 1055T on Newegg, and you will see numerous posts commenting on just how good the stock HSF is. If you aren't going to OC, then it might make getting the 1055T a much better option, assuming that you can spend the extra $16.00.

Re: cpu cooler AMD
Good choice with the AC Freezer 7. I´ve had it in two computers and it performs very well (considering its price). I think you won´t regret th purchase. I like AC coolers a lot, good bang for its price, and relatively quiet. Indeed, I´m using an AC Xtreme in my Q9550, and I´m happy with it

Re: cpu cooler AMD
seems to perform beutifully and luckily I had short heat spreaders on my RAM or I would have had to modify the bottom fins. is this intended to be mounted with the fan on the top or the bottom? I currently have it mounted with it on the top

Re: cpu cooler AMD
I usually blow the air towards the back or the top of the case, (depending on CPU orientation) On an AMD system that would have the fan on the bottom blowing towards the power supply if it's a top mounted case or a vent if the PSU is at the bottom of the case. Intel usually blow the air from front to back. (a few motherboards may be different orientations)

Re: cpu cooler AMD
Well, the allocation of the fan depends on your case. I have the fan at the bottom in order to make the air flow towards the power supply (from bottom to the top) so as to exhaust the hot air with power supply´s fan. If I had it installed on the other side, the hot air goes directly to the graphics card with the possibility of overheating it.
PPPP PPPP HHHH HHHH FFFF GGGG This schematic shows my distribution, where "P" is power supply, "H" is the heatsing, "F" is the fan and "G" is the graphics card. I have it as this review: http://blog.pccomponentes.com/freezer7prorev2/ |

Re: cpu cooler AMD
I have a bottom mounted psu and a fan on the top of the case so I should flip the heatsink and fan it seems. The fan blades don't have much curl so I couldn't figure out which way it moved air.
I wil have to flip and apply some mx-4 in the process instead of the preapplied mx-2 |

At least, if you finally decide to change it, you have a better thermal paste than the pre-applied one.
