raid 5 help
hi guys, well i'm stuck in a very awkward position a pickle more likely , promised i would help somebody and he ended being an ass.
i have a server running "ms server 2003", configured to raid 5 ( i think), it is using a raid controller card (so it is hardware raid) Adaptec 2610SA , has three hard-drives, in an HP ML 350. the problem is that first disk (disk 0) has an error a bad sector. so when it boots its crashes, by getting a BSOD, and it restart, so i dont know exactly what the error is, so it means i have to swap, the drive's the task is to return the machine like "nothing ever happened", that is without loosing andy configuration, or data! so should i just plug in a new drive, same size of-course and ask it to rebuild raid... if you look this is how it is partisioned, they are all 160GB harddrives _________________________ |NTFs (31GB) | RAID . . . . . .| |___________|____________| | Raid . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .| |________________________| | RAID . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | |________________________| so the best way i have though of fixing the problem with out any previous skill of raid is to image the corrpt drive, and repair the operating system even with out going into the raid console..., but would that work!! PS: i have imaged the drives, just incase i scew up...

Re: raid 5 help
by all rights.. generally all you have to do is pull the faulty drive out.. replace it with a identical or larger size drive, and then allow the raid array to "rebuild"..... and cross your fingers and hope that none of the other 2 drives are faulty..
Raid 5 requires a minimum of 3 drives which you have... and if any MORE then 1 of the drives fail... all data/configuration is lost...

Re: raid 5 help
you have to tell it to rebuild sometimes..... should be able to log into the ui/gui interface of the raid controller.

Re: raid 5 help
erg..... if that is the case..... the thing i'd recommend to do is to pop ANOTHER drive in and try and get windows to install to it without effecting the excisting raid array...
then using that drive... see if you can access the files.... Sounds like something else has gone wrong....

Re: raid 5 help
i dont think they had installed the raid correctly, but is there any way i can fix the os, like from booting from a disk, and repair os, will that work ?

Re: raid 5 help
that is where i am also afraid of, a few days after they gave me the server, their backup server died on them, so i have the only machine that has any hope, or at least more than the other of living.
hence the pickle, the manual of the raid controller would have helped, .. i'll work on it all night and see what i can do, i'll post my results tomoro

Re: raid 5 help
wow..... for both their main and backup server to die so suddenly at the same time..... i would be very curious as to how and why...
For a raid 5 array to 100% faile is fairly rare... for additional backup solutions to fail too would bring about a theory of intentional destruction for one intent or another.... who knows.... i'd be wondering..

Re: raid 5 help
well same here, just what are the odd's,,,,
i'm having a bad morning, i was suspicious of my third image it being only 10GB ... ( the images were not made by me) and now it seems that disk 0, and disk 2 are both have bad sectors,. so now i should just jump off a building or something!!!

What does this do?

Re: raid 5 help
It could be that the "corrupt disk" is absoloutely fine hardware-wise, but the Windows installation itself has gone tits up?

Re: raid 5 help
The ONLY time i've seen more then one drive fail at the same time in the same machine has been during a serious surge/lightning strike.. it wasn't powerful enough to kill things completely.. but the drives emediately started to fall apart at the same time.....
any other situation using raid arrays... if all drives appear to be going funky..... it's usually the raid controllers fault.. i would suggest yanking them out and plugging them into a good working computer and NOT let them boot... but load the drives diagnostics disk and run through the smart/short/long tests to see if they really do have bad sectors..

i did try pressing F8 when booting, disabled auto restart on error, and saw that during normal boot the error (BSOD) is 0x0000007B . however when i go to safe mode, i don't see a bsod, it loads the drivers the last one it loads is acpitabl.dat and immediately it is supposed to load the gui it reboots, without any errors this time,
