Power Save Mode Problems

I have been trying to solve this problem for ages and I wonder if you might help me.

My computer (a not very special PC running Windows XP SP3) with a ASRock Motherboard and a Radeon 850 graphics card and a Dell 24in monitor really does not like to go into power save mode switching off the monitor after a few minutes of idleness.

I recently talked to AMD about this via email and they suggested I uninstall their software and re-install it. They gave me full instructions to remove every last vestige of their old setup; update my bios and reinstall the ATI drivers etc.

I did this and the power save has got worse, not better. Before it only refused to go into power save mode if I played a video on screen. Now it seems to do it all the time. Sometimes I can get the display to go into power save by right clicking on the screen, going into properties and resetting the power save mode; more often I have to re-boot.

This is annoying rather than disastrous - I can after all switch off my monitor's power when I leave my PC but I would like it to work properly.

In the past I have installed a "fix" from Microsoft which did not help, but I would be delighted to get help from other forum members.

This is my first posting - but thanks in advance for ideas and replies!
