Re: Suggestions for a ground up build

By the time he is ready to grow his gaming library he could pic up another card and crossfire it and by that time they will be cheap, given if this person does at all. And in the end it all will be his choice, the build I put together(with guidance) should serve him well for some time. But thanks for your input it is sound in my book and the way I would go personaly. |

Re: Suggestions for a ground up build
You can still go with 2 way crossfire with a dual slot card, and it'll be way, way quieter.

I have a pair of dual slot 4870s in my system, and they certainly don't cool as well as a pair of single slot cards would...eapecially the one on top, as it's pulling 'cooling air' almost directly off the back side of the bottom card. The difference is great enough that in order to keep the top card close the same temp as the bottom (especially in gaming), I have to run the fan at a 10-15% higher speed, and that definitely raises the noise level.

Re: Suggestions for a ground up build
I've got two reference design 5770 cards, The top one being the XFX. During normal use the top card does run quite a bit hotter, but the bottom card dials everything back, timings/speed etc. so it's basically at idle. When gaming both cards are running full tilt and they both end up being about the same temps and fan speeds (set to auto) are running about the same as well. Nothing has exceeded or reached what I would consider "scary" territory.
The OP isn't planning dual cards anyways, so this is all a moot point.

Re: Suggestions for a ground up build
While noise may not be a constraint, it runs hotter. It's basically a 5770 with a one slot cooler instead of a two slot. I would still HIGHLY recommend the Sapphire, as it comes with a 2 yr warranty (more than you need, most likely) and a MUCH better cooler.
But if you're set on XFX, all of their 5770's come with double lifetime warranty -- so pick any, but the single slot is really only useful for tri or quadfire. But if that's what you want, go ahead

Re: Suggestions for a ground up build
I can imagine some HTPC applications for a single slot 5770 too, tbf.

Re: Suggestions for a ground up build
I think that's pretty much it's intention...... at least the XFX one that is mentioned.

Re: Suggestions for a ground up build
Thanks, though I do not see this person needing to meet those needs, at least not in the near future.
He is not a first person shooter atleast not now but there is room to grow. He is on his own now And in the end it all will be his choice, the build I put together(with guidance) should serve him well for some time. I feel I followed my personal premise, budget,performance/ bang for buck and future growth potentail. Even though more input serves only to fill my coffers of knowledge. And, no offence to Oldbuzzards Fanboyism, I really like the rip jaws G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH Last edited by slvrback; Jan 12, 2011 at 10:38 PM. |

G.Skill has someone from Customer Support looking at the reviews, and replying to bad ones, offering help with RMA, etc. That says a lot to me. Means that they want their customers to be happy and are willing to take the extra little step to do so.

Re: Suggestions for a ground up build
I had issues with the Ripjaws in an AMD system and ended up going with Corsair.... no issues. Just got another 2X2gig of Corsair for the rack system.... no issues. Two different motherboards each. (ASRock and ECS) Not a "fanboy" I use whatever works.

Re: Suggestions for a ground up build
GSkill has very good CS - never had an issue with an RMA with them. They post on NewEgg, respond to emails within 24h always (thank god...) and also have an incredibly active, helpful forum for any other help you may need.
/fanboy over Oh. And Corsair is good, too. |
