Re: Modest upgrade

Well, I figured if I was going to show the progress of the upgrade(s) then I might as well post it on the same thread.

I got the power supply and RAM at the same time:

GEIL 12GB DDR3 1600MHz 9-9-9-28 under £140. I still can't believe it!

Like I said, it was my first Corsair PSU and blimey, was I in for a shock.
I opened up the box, peered inside and was greeted by the contents: a bunch of cable ties, black screws, a UK 3-pin kettle lead, a case sticker and, as you might expect, the PSU itself.
Setting the other gubbings aside (except the case sticker, which is now the latest addition to my 40k army case) I had a proper look at the PSU itself. It was wrapped in a material bag (which, for some reason, has a pull-string on it), followed by a bubble wrap bag. The PSU weighs a ton! Sure is a high-end anvil. The metal is nice, not the sort I've become accustomed to on a PSU and on the underside, on the fan cover, there's a shiny spot protected by a dust protection sticker.
Impressed? Definitely. Would I buy one? Hell no, still can't justify the extra cost on top of a reputable manufacturer's PSU. This one doesn't count because it was the cheapest reputable ~450W.

The PC I'm working on is kept in a relatively dust-free environment and the area around it is vacuumed and dusted on a regular occasion. It is, however, getting on a bit and hasn't had a shave in a while.

"You've never opened the front and cleaned the fan filter, have you?"

"I have a fan filter?"

You'd never believe me but this was cleaned less than a year ago.

First off is a backup. I ran out of monitors so I improvised.

Doesn't it look shiny?

More to come...

The finishing product:

Not bad if I do say so myself, considering this case really lacks cable tidying.

Btw, it was an 8600GT and 650W PSU. I haven't got a clue where the PSU came from. I think it must've been picked up retail.

Re: Modest upgrade

That's a nice system, and pretty awesome for its intended use. No aftermarket cooler for overclocking? :P

Re: Modest upgrade

Intel stock cooler *hiss*

Kidding (or not...) aside, looks amazing when I rebuild my system (so messy in there right now) I'll have to see how it compares...kind of ugly atm >.< and I would call that a very good job given the space/case

Re: Modest upgrade

Thanks, synth.
You should've seen it when I first got it, back when I didn't care about tucking away cables, aesthetically or otherwise. IDE cables, temperature sensors, SATA cables, front (top) panel ports... all strewn across the case in any old fashion, just as long as it was plugged in and working. Picture a year's worth of quick-patching a network room but inside a case. I even had two 3870s in Crossfire overlapping into the HDD cage.

Blibbax - Despite the sarcasm, I would've seriously considered an aftermarket cooler. I have a Hyper 212 (with replaced fans) because of the amount of heat that thing kicked out on idle use; it was reaching the 60s region with light use. According to SpeedFan the CPU is at 40°C, which I find is more than acceptable.
This should shred rendering time into little pieces.

Just an FYI - the fan has Arctic Silver on it

Re: Modest upgrade

Arctic silver? That doesn't go well on fanblades, Tak...probably not good, you know :?

And that is basically my current case. I have some minimal stuff going on, but I'm planning on (when I get a new gfx card) on getting matching SATA cables, ties, and fans.
