Failing Monitor?

I was talking with Blibb about this, like to see some other ideas.

I ended up swapping in/out some components in my PC a couple days ago, and my BenQ G2000W monitor starting having issues. Red-pink lines appear across the screen, and green pixels flash on and off in random locations. It doesn't seem to be the gpu, as I have two monitors hooked up to the card and only one is displaying any issues at all.

Here are some pics:

Note: the weird pattern in this is partially due to the angle of the picture, but:

Re: Failing Monitor?

Try the monitor with another PC. It's less likely to be the monitor than the graphics card.

Re: Failing Monitor?

I didn't think it would either, but the other monitor running off the same gfx card is fine.

I'll hook it up to another comp / get some other wires to test with tomorrow, just to make sure.

Edit: Is there a way to resize images within the forum code (ie [img height=400] or something?) or should I do that manually in PS before posting images next time? ~_~

As you are using imageshack for hosting...there is options to resize the JPG while uploading...

Just ignore the 640x480 option.... if i go higher than that it screws up the News on HH's Homepage.

Er, right...I'll go do that...

Although the forum option would be handy if possible

Thanks Mig!

Re: Failing Monitor?

My first impression is a bad video card (in particular bad RAM, or bad RAMDAC).

Simplest ways to test this:

- Use the questionable monitor by itself with the other disconnected entirely.

- Use the questionable monitor on the same connector as the supposed good monitor, and again, by itself (to rule out the connector).

- Use the questionable monitor on the cable from the supposed good monitor (to rule out the cable).

Also, don't forget to check those cables! Just because it's connected doesn't mean it's a solid connection, so be sure to reseat the cables (for VGA/DVI that includes checking the cables for any damaged pins).

Oh, and I almost forgot this one. Try switching your desktop to 16bit colour. I know, it sounds weird, but having the desktop in 32bit colour can in fact hide artifacts. You may have artifacts showing up on the other monitor, and just don't know it. If you get more artifacts showing up, or artifacts showing up on the 2nd monitor too when in 16bit colour, then it might point to an issue with the card itself, or at the very least a driver issue.

Re: Failing Monitor?

It happened to be an insecure connection involving the cable. Although it was screwed in all the way, re-connecting the DVI cable and tightening it at a different angle fixed the issue. Bit weird, but oh well, I'll take it.

Thanks guys.
