raid is it worth it ?
Was looking to set up raid as i have to 500 gig sata seagates.
At the moment i,m using a single sea gate and the other as storage. So my question is would it be worth setting up the 2 drives in a raid for more performance? |

Re: raid is it worth it ?
In my experience performance boost is negligible added to a higher risk of data loss should you have a drive problem.

Re: raid is it worth it ?
I'm getting good performance on a couple of systems with Seagate 500's set in RAID.
Earth shattering? No..... Respectable, Yeah! They are not boot drives/OS drives, I've got SSD drives doing that and the RAID drives are for all my programs and music stuff... Some games on one system too. On the data loss idea...... if a single drive dies, you've lost your stuff. If one drive in a RAID 0 (striping) dies, you've lost your stuff. No real difference to my mind. Word! BACKUP...... So if these two drives are your only drives, then what would you backup too? Better to have a system drive with one and a backup drive with the other (or RAID 1, Mirror) If you have backup covered elsewhere and these are system drives, then it's worth a shot to go RAID 0.

Re: raid is it worth it ?
Personally I'd raid 0 them (one big space is more practical and faster than two small ones), then use an external HDD, a large USB stick or a smaller, older drive to backup anything important (if you're anything like me, 90% of your data is easily replaceable).

Re: raid is it worth it ?
I use all 7200RPM drives. Game boot times can decrease with raid 0 but I've never noticed an increase in performance (unless it's on my SSD. SC2 ♥) in an actual game. I'm not going to risk my data for a decrease in boot times, but to each their own.

Re: raid is it worth it ?
How is RAID 0 a risk for your data..... if a drive dies, your data is gone..... single drive or RAID, same result.

Re: raid is it worth it ?
With two drives, you can have important data copied on both.
Also, if you have RAID and one drive fails, all your data is gone. If you have two drives and one drive fails, (roughly) half your data is gone.

Ummmmmmmm, Yeah.
How does that answer the question?

Re: raid is it worth it ?
If your data is striped across 2 disks and one fails then all the data will be lost. If you have data on two separate disks and one fails then the data on the good disk will be fine. Plus it's easier to recover data from a corrupt single drive.
Striping just makes data recovery a major pain in the ass. |

You asked how raid zero was a risk for your data (post #6 of this thread). I explained that it increases the likelihood of any given piece of data (that isn't backed up elsewhere) being lost in the event of a single drive failure. This isn't an attack on your configuration, choice of hardware, personal preferences or anything else. In an earlier post (post #4 of this thread) I actually advocated using raid zero then backing up important data elsewhere, which in my humble opinion you'd be stupid not to do anyway.

Re: raid is it worth it ?
I'm not trying to be argumentative either....... I just don't get the "RAID is scary, you'll lose all your data" concept. You, blibbax, are not the one that's necessarily promoting that concept here, but it is being mentioned and they are who I was asking......
There's no more risk one way or the other. Also, when I replied right after your post there was only one sentence in that post..... No fair editing after the fact.

Re: raid is it worth it ?
I often have sudden afterthoughts after reading a post I've just made, that's down to my own inadequacies :P

Re: raid is it worth it ?
It was explained above adequately. There is also no noticeable gains in games other than load times, so I don't find it worth it. But...again, to each their own.
And blibb is a slippery one.
