New PC - Suggestions
Okay, it's that time of year again when I am feeling the itch to upgrade and get a brand new PC, so far this is what the list looks like, any suggestions to lower/better the build will be much appreciated. I'll be buying this rig in the next couple of months so hopefully prices will have gone down by then too.
CPU : AMD : Phenom II : X6 1100T : AM3 : Six Core - $249.00 Asus Crosshair IV Fomula - $219.99 RAM : DDR3 : 8GB/Kit : PC16000 : Patriot PX538G2000ELK : Viper Xtreme - $122.00 Sapphire AMD 6970 2GB - $369.99 Antec : Dark Fleet : DF-35 ATX Case - $121.05 BFG 1000W PSU - $98.99 Asus VE27Q 27'' 1080p 1920x1080 monitor - $331.06 60GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD - $129.00 Corsair H70 CPU Cooler - $108.19 SteelSeries 3H Gaming Headset - $54.97 Razer Arctosa Gaming Keyboard - $45.67 Razer DeathAdder Gaming Mouse - $50.62 SteelSeries : Steelpad Qck : 63004 Gaming Mousepad - $9.10 LG DVD RW Drive - $19.27 Windows 7 Home Premium 64 - $108.38 Total: $2036.29 I don't really use the extra buttons on gaming mice/keyboards so that is why I am just going for a simple Razer keyboard and mouse. Some of the prices are off OTV's price list (On The Verge, the computer shop I'm buying this stuff from) and their catalogue can be found here:- OTV Catalogue And some are off Newegg.ca Edit: Old PC (sold)

How close will you be sitting to this thing?

Re: New PC - Suggestions
Looks like a nice starting point before tweaking... which should begin with a nicer case. Seems sad to put such sull stuff in a bland/basic model like that.

Re: New PC - Suggestions
Couple things.
The V8 is overrated. Would you consider switching (Corsair H50/H70, Noctua, etc?). The case, as said before, is not deserving of such a mighty rig. Surely if you're about to drop that much cash you can purchase a half decent case, no? ![]() Also -- most 6950s can be flashed into fully functional 6970s, so you may be able to shave off some cost there.

I know the HAF (932 and X) from CoolerMaster glow red and have a sidewindow. They're pretty popular high end gaming rig cases (see them at LANs a lot, but boy are they heavy!). I use a Storm Sniper, which is made specifically for LANs (it has a side window option) but it glows blue. You can always replace the fans, but probably not worth the hassle. The Raven RV02 is one of the sleekest looking cases I've ever seen, it got a gold award on DH if I remember correctly, and is pretty darned nice. It's...also just gigantic. I'll see if I can dig up anything else with a side window to your liking ![]() Links (I'm using NewEgg for convenience): HAF X: Newegg.ca - COOLER MASTER HAF X RC-942-KKN1 Black Steel/ Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case HAF 932: Newegg.ca - COOLER MASTER HAF 932 RC-932-KKN1-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case Storm Sniper: Newegg.ca - COOLER MASTER Storm Sniper SGC-6000-KXN1-GP Black Steel, ABS Plastic, Mesh bezel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Raven RV02: Newegg.ca - SILVERSTONE RAVEN RV02-BW Matte black 0.8mm Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case Edit: dang Cal, you literally posted less than 3 seconds after me. Talk about weird. o.O And I can understand your preference for one big monitor. A 6950 flashed to 6970 (or just a 6970) should last you quite some time, though you may want to wait for some custom cooled models to come out (given how hot they run). I'd recommend the PowerColor PCS++ 6950 (Got a perfect in all scores here!) but I dont know when they're hitting the market.

Re: New PC - Suggestions
Nah, I've never really liked eyefinity for the sole reason that there's boarders in between the monitors and I prefer a boarderless design instead, I know they'res boarderless monitors you can buy but that would just send the price out into space, not so?
Also I plan to be using that one card for quite a while so I'd really like to have just one screen so I can max settings for longer hehehe. synthesis I'm looking at the Corsair H70 and H50 and they're water cooling huh? What if there was a leak in my precious PC? I've never dealt with water cooling before, and that is just a constant fear I've got. I'm still waiting for what case I should get, preferably one with good cable management.

Corsair is also wonderful in the service dept. There's a story floating about the net about how a defective H50 leaked onto a guy's P6X58D motherboard and fried it and his cpu. Corsair paid for a new H50 and replaced the motherboard and cpu for free...talk about service. I use a H50 with me $2k+ rig and am not afraid. I'm sure V3 or Craig will vouch for it. And on the case regard, the Storm Sniper is a little lacking (it is a midtower, though). The HAF and RV02 are both excellent. Re: New PC - Suggestions
The H50 and H70 are factory sealed so leaks are highly unlikely but they perform great, run quiet and are very easy to install. We use them in all our reviews.

And I'd still recommend the 6950 flash and the RV02 or HAF X if this were for me. Here's an article on the 6950 flash: AMD Radeon HD 6950 to HD 6970 Mod | techPowerUp

Re: New PC - Suggestions
I already flashed a 9500 to a 9700 long long ago and I`m not doing it again hehe, this time I would like to purchase the actual card. Ofcourse I have owned a 4870X2 before but lets not talk about that lol.
As for the case I`ve decided on the Cooler Master HAF 922 if thats okay, since the HAF X is not in stock yet at OTV and I don`t want to order anything in over the internet this time to avoid waiting. I`ve also changed the cooler to the Corsair H70 as can be seen above. Thanks a lot for your help guys, its been invaluable so far. Still taking suggestions so keep em coming.

And make sure everything will be able to fit. It looks comparable to my case so you should have enough room, but you may want to double check. And of course, everyone's always glad to help just know we want pics in return, cal.

Re: New PC - Suggestions
Just had a look at the mouse options, for $10 more you can get a DeathAdder, go for that. Its one of the classic mice, one of the best ever. I have used one daily for years now and cant fault it, only recently did I move to the Roccat Kone[+] for my work PC as it is an extra level of brilliance but the DeathAdder moved to the main benching PC so still gets some use.

Edit: How does the Dark Fleet compare to the HAF 922, I'm currently looking at this Dark Fleet DF 35 case as it has a side window which I want very much and white L.E.D.s which is a nice color variation from blue. Picture:-

Re: New PC - Suggestions
I was actually looking at the DF35 earlier. I've heard no major complaints about it, but the 922 has better reviews from what I can gather from retail sites and forums. But if it catches your eye more, go for it and tell us how it is!
![]() And I'm thinking about swapping my case at some point in the near future as this one has a couple issues with it (not necessarily CoolerMaster's fault). Was really hoping for that Phantom from the giveaway, but oh well xD.

Re: New PC - Suggestions
if you have to chose between the the 922 and 932 go for the latter its bigger and bigger is better
oh.. just a negative on this case its like super pours and doesn't have dust filters so you will need to clean it once in a while and that is a real pain here ...

In that case I'm going to go for the Antec DarkFleet, it has air filters so it should be easier to clean.

Re: New PC - Suggestions
I just built a new system using the Phenom II X6.
However I went with the 1090T instead of the 1100T. I just couldn't see paying the premium for a .1Ghz speed difference. Especially since you can get that .1Ghz by giving the BIOS a stern look. I opted for the Corsair Vengeance Memory as well, but I'm thinking you are making a mistake with that particular selection. That's 3 x 4 sticks, which is intended for the triple channel Intel systems. You would want either 2 x 4 or (8GB) of 4 x 4 (16Gb) so that you run in dual channel for the AMD X6. I went with the 4 x 4. Also, is there any particular reason that you are going with OTV as opposed to Newegg.CA? The 1100T at Newegg is 249.00 at the Egg vs 265.00 at OTV. The MB is 219.99 vs 250.65. Plus Newegg.CA has a much wider product selection. Another thing...OTV doesn't carry CORSAIR PSUs

Re: New PC - Suggestions
I'm buying this stuff from OTV because I don't want to wait another day once I get the money from my '09 and '10 tax returns to build this thing in 2-3months as I'll have been waiting all that time for that money.
Thanks for pointing out the RAM thing to me, I think I'll pick up an 8GB kit of Patriot Viper Xtremes instead then. Edit: as for them not carrying Corsair PSUs, it looks like they don't indeed.

So I've calculated I'll be able to save 200 dollars if I buy some of the stuff from Newegg.ca instead and I've changed the PSU and headset for something else (BFG PSU and SteelSeries headset). I guess I'll just have to wait a little more yet.

BFG went bankrupt, so all of their existing products come with no manuf. warranty.
Just a btw.

I'll get the Scythe Choriki 2 then, I didn't know BFG had shut down.
I was considering getting the Asus HD 6970 Direct CU II but the 6970 doesn't put out a lot of heat if you keep it at stock GPU Voltages so I'm not going to bother.

I would still go with the DirectCU, but up to you.
I do hope you go with an XFX over a Sapphire otherwise.

Why an XFX over a Sapphire? Sapphire's are legendary. They have really good customer service.

Re: New PC - Suggestions
Heh. They both do, and there is little difference between their cards.
However, XFX is an American company (its parent is Taiwanese, but nbd...), where Sapphire is Taiwanese. XFX support is American based out of California, and Sapphire's is not. XFX's double lifetime warranty on products means every product is insured if you ever sell your product -- the warranty will transfer one time (aka, from you to me, etc. etc. ). I just tend to go American when possible, which is why I try to stay with EVGA and XFX (unless Galaxy gives me a free AcceloXtreme cooler. Then it's time to go with Taiwan).Just my 2c.
