exclamation Canīt Access to BIOS with Keyboard and Mouse USB connected

I only can get into BIOS with my Keyboard LABTEC ("DEL") if i unplugged my USB Mouse from USB Port. Mouse turn on during POST and work well in Windows. Keyboard also works well in Windows with USB Mouse.

Weeks ago same problem happened, i borrowed a keyboard (Logitech) from a friend, it worked fine, and suddenly (magic?) my LABTEC worked perfectly again with USB Mouse connected to USB Port.

What kind of conflict is that? Is my LABTEC damaged, despite it worked smoothly in Windows... I tried connect the keyboard to PS/2 port with an adapter but it is not detected during Post (Keyboard Error)

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Re: Canīt Access to BIOS with Keyboard and Mouse USB connected

So your keyboard is USB too, right?

It's hard to say for sure what the problem is, but my guess is either the USB Legacy support isn't working (which allows you to use USB devices, such as a keyboard, within DOS), or something is messing up the detection of the keyboard.

Couple things to try:

- The top most USB ports on the back of your machine are the highest priority ones, as well as being separately powered from the rest of the ports (the bottom USB ports share their power with the onboard USB headers). So, try plugging your keyboard into one of the top most ports. You can also try putting your mouse in those ports too along with the keyboard, but if you have the same issue try the mouse in one of the lower ports so that it's on a separate hub. You can also try the reverse (mouse top, keyboard lower).

- If you can get into the bios be sure to turn on any USB Legacy support (without knowing what board you have I can only suggest this, but if you post your exact board I can give you a rundown of what options to look for). Also, disable or remove any options in the boot order that deals with booting to USB devices as this check by the bios during post can glitch some USB keyboards (such as detecting them, which activates the device, but since it can't boot to the device it turns it off for a second right about the time the legacy support kicks in... it's a bit more complicated than that, but you get the idea I hope).

One last thing: be sure to post the motherboard you have (exact model and brand) as well as what other USB devices you are plugging into the board. That will help when it comes to figuring out a solution.

When Keyboard is plugged to Keyboard USB Port and Mouse is pluggued in one of the bottom USB ports everything works fine. However as i said before, i borrowed a keyboard from a friend and it worked fine with Keyboard and Mouse plugged in proper ports. Then my keyboard started working fine with my USB mouse plugged in proper port.

I forgot to say that i forgot a pen drive plugged into a USB Port when i shut down the system. Is this Relevant?

BOARD MANUAL:
USB LEGACY SUPPORT (AUTO)
This motherboard supports Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices. The default (AUTO) allows the system to dtect a USB device at startup. If detected, the USB controller legacy mode is enabled. If not detected, the USB controller legacy mode is disabled.

When you set the field to (DISABLED), the USB controller legacy mode is disabled whether or not you are using a USB device.

My Board does not allow booting from an USB device.

Re: Canīt Access to BIOS with Keyboard and Mouse USB connected

UPDATE:

Since my ASUS P4B266 motherboard is 9 years old (nice performance donīt you think? eheh), i bought a new battery. I cleared the BIOS CMOS, installed the new battery, and everything worked again, lets see how long it will last...

Thank you for you support.

Re: Canīt Access to BIOS with Keyboard and Mouse USB connected

Sorry for not getting back to you. Busy with work.

I wish I had an explanation for you as to why it suddenly worked when you used your friends board. I'm also glad it's working now that you changed out the battery, however I don't think this has fixed things. Clearing out the bios itself may have been whats reset things for you, so I'd keep an eye on it.

BTW, back to your first post, with the USB to PS2 adapter things can be tricky. You may need a specific adapter, one that is known to work with the Labtec board. For instance, one that comes with a Logitech set may not work with a Microsoft one, and vice versa. They may not even work with any other USB keyboard/mice either.
