I had to do a re-install on an XP system on a HP 533w desktop. I keep getting errors, so I have done some disk diagnostics and keep getting a locked screen with horizontal and blinking vertical colored bars...several programs do this.It has PCI type mb, so I don't know how to fix this..anybody got a clue how to troubleshoot? Thanks

Can you take a photo of it?

It might be a bad connection or hardware failure, but a photo would really help.

Re: video lockout when testing HDI had to do a re-install on an XP system on a HP 533

I am no hardware expert, but there are a few things you could try.
Hopefully someone else will have something easier to suggest first.

Do you have this problem only when you try to connect through HDMI? I didn't even know HDMI was used on desktop PCs at the time. If yes, try a different connection. Does it still malfunction?

Now, if it isn't a problem with the connection:

First of all make sure all cables are attached firmly. Both outside and inside your pc case. BTW, if working on the inside of the case, make sure the PSU is turned OFF.
Check to see if the graphics card is still firmly in its place and hasn't moved at all.

If that fails, turn on the PC with the case on and check to see if all the fans inside the case work. Including the graphics card and the CPU. Just in case, check the fan of the PSU too.

If that fails, make sure there is nothing wrong with your monitor or cables. Try another monitor with your computer or try the monitor you have on another computer.

If that fails, open the PC case and see how many DIMMs of memory you have. If only one, change it place and try again. If more than one, mix and match a few (including removing completely all of them in sequence) to make sure there is no bad memory dimm or other issue with the RAM.

If all the above fail, then there is a good chance either your mainboard or most likely your graphics card is ready to go to the underworld. If you have a spare graphics card, replace your current one.

If your mainboard doesn't have a separate graphics card but has onboard ("inside" the mainboard and not one which gets into a slot of the mainboard) graphics solution, then if you can go to the BIOS, disable the onboard graphics and install a separate graphics card. Plug your monitor to it.

Is this your system? HP Pavilion 533w Desktop PC Product Specifications HP Pavilion 533w Desktop PC (US) - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

It's quite old and it is possible it has simply decided it wants to stop working.

Re: video lockout when testing HDI had to do a re-install on an XP system on a HP 533

Thanks for the reply...I was incorrect with the model number. it is a 551w and as I stated in my first post, it is a pci type motherboard. I have done all the obvious checking on cables, etc. I have replaced the ram, tested the output of the PS, checked all fans. This system has no HDMI...
The main problem is I cannot run a hd scan, but I have put in 3 different used hd's and I get the same responses...I cannot re-load XP becaused I get BSOD when it starts with windows setup. I have completely re-formatted the hd, so Virus is not an issue......

According to this
HP Pavilion 551w Desktop PC Product Specifications HP Pavilion 551w Desktop PC (US/CAN) - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

It has an integrated graphics solution, plus an AGP slot. Is the monitor connected to the mainboard directly, or do you have a seperate graphics card installed in the AGP slot?

Do you only get the problems like in the photos when you do a HD scan, and all other times it is ok?

Re: video lockout when testing HDI had to do a re-install on an XP system on a HP 533

The monitor is connected to the MB..I think I may have an extra video card that I can install to try.
Please understand, this system is not working at all. I am trying to re-install the XP os....I am thinking I may have a bad MB although the capacitors look good.

Re: video lockout when testing HDI had to do a re-install on an XP system on a HP 533

As I said before, the best is to make sure there is nothing wrong with the monitor or the cables. If the monitor is definetely not to blame, or the cables connecting to the PC, then since you use the onboard graphics card, make sure you have a graphics card which works for your mainboard, then, start the computer, enter BIOS, disable onboard graphics card. Switch off the computer. Plug in the graphic card, then plug the monitor to this graphics card, then boot the machine.

I am glad it is ok now. Still, just to play it safe, you might want to start thinking about buying a new system one day. Have fun.
