Blown PSU

I got a phone-call today informing me that a PC that belongs to my other half went pop and won't turn on again. I'm hoping it's the just power supply that was at fault and not anything more.
I think it is likely that the power supply had overloaded because it seemed to be a fair bit on the warm side whilst gaming. It never seemed to have any problems but I had my doubts before I bough the PSU in the first place.

The PC is an AMD X2 6000 with 1 disc drive, 1 hard drive and a Zotac GTS 250. It has (had?) a Corsair CX 430.
I'm still a bit iffy about getting a PSU that's of a similar wattage but then I can't justify paying a lot for it, considering how often the PC is used and the components it houses. Would an OCZ Stealth Xstream 2 500W PSU suffice or should I look to go a bit higher?
The graphics won't be replaced for a good long while, if at all so future-proofing isn't a consideration.

Re: Blown PSU

I realise that you appear to have evidence to the contrary, but 400W is really more than enough for that rig... I run a more thirsty setup on a 430W (branded as 460W, but lying) Coolermaster, and have done for several years.

My (recently replaced) overclocked E2220 used more power than a stock Athlon X2 6000, my 9800GTX+ has identical power consumption to a GTS250 (oddly enough), and I have multiple hard drives.

The 460W (430W really, as I said) Coolermaster Extreme Power is by all accounts an inferior unit to the Corsair CX.

If it is the PSU that's gone, and it's the PSU that's at fault for the PSU having gone, I'd get Corsair to ship you a replacement. From what I've heard they're pretty good about this sort of thing.

Re: Blown PSU

Yeah, that rig shouldn't be able to pull over 300W under load and I know lots of people around here that have used a CX400 with a Core 2 Quad and a Radeon 4800 or similar cards over the past couple of years. Like Blibbax said, if you won't have a peace of mind unless you get something stronger, that's understandable, but no need to go overboard, 500W is really the upper limit you should be looking at. As for the OCZ model, OCZ have been notorious for making one good and then one bad model, but it should do fine.
