System overhaul in the next coming weeks?

well apparently, i'm going to be completely upgrading my computer in the coming weeks.

after doing a bit of reading, it seems that AMD is delaying their Bulldozer Zambezi chips for a while... can anyone confirm this?

i was set to upgrade to an AMD FX system given that the processors were going to come out this month, but.... it doesn't look like thats how its going to play out..

also, i do not like the layout of the current released AMD boards... i think theres still way too many PCI slots and too many blocked PCI-E x1 slots.

Intel boards though, seem to have better layouts where dual slot cards block the PCI slots on the board while still keeping the PCI-E slots clear.

the only problem with Sandy Bridge systems is the lack of full speed PCI-E slots. I'd rather have full-speed slots just in case i use some powerful future dual GPU cards that could be limited with the x8 slots...

with all the above in mind, here are the parts that i plan to buy soon.

i personally would rather not wait much longer if possible but if there are going to be better options in the future, i may just have to find a way to prolong the life of my current computer...

i do know that there were a couple of 'events' that aren't happening cos the bulldzoer isn't ready, so it looks like they're late..

Just out of interest, why are you going from 8GB to 16GB of RAM?
Also, what are your opinions of the 1366 socket; why have you omitted that?

im going with 16GB of RAM mainly because i like having matched sticks of RAM with the same ICs, and knowing me... id probably just buy another set of RAM just to have it even if i would never use it.

since memory manufacturers like switching to different ICs at the drop of a hat, its best to get all sticks at the same time to have identical sticks (which then, more or less, have similar overclocking capacities).

as for not considering LGA 1366, mainly thats because the motherboards are so old and they do not have native support for SATA III. the CPUs are also hot and heavy with the older manufacturing processes.... id rather have a system with newer technologies natively supported and just sell it if something better comes along.

I think I'd wait for Bulldozer.

If you pull the trigger now, and Bulldozer turns out to be a beast, you'll kicking yourself for not waiting.

If you decide to wait, and Bulldozer is a dog, you really haven't lost anything.

Sure, your current system isn't leading edge, but it isn't a POS either.

You do have a valid complaint about the PCI-e 1x slots. However, on my board, I just used the lowest full length PCI-e for my X-FI PCI-e card, and it's working just fine.

Unless there is a good reason to get a faster CPU NOW, I would wait too. I don't know what you are doing that you need to upgrade your Q9550...Your GPU is a bit old, but IMO, hardly worth to change your whole system.
Of course if you need to, then go ahead.
16GB sure sound like a waste if you are not going to use them. Save the money and go a trip to Disneyland or something. I know I would.

I'd also say that, unless there's something specific it's struggling with, your current system is already pretty decent.

You could just get a new SSD and (if you game) GPU - those would probably make a far, far bigger difference, and you could swap them into a newer rig in a few months when you know how fast Bulldozer is/isn't. Even if Bulldozer isn't that fast, it might bring down SB prices.

Yea... normally I'd just keep the system but right now, the motherboard is gone and I sold its replacement for a good bit of cash.

Aside from that, my OCZ ram gave out yet again and I'm sick of RMAing them...

So. Since I want to replace the motherboard and RAM, I may as well just throw in a new CPU.

I'm sure I can sell an i7 system for good money if I don't like it.

(Oh, and isn't OCZ RAM lovely? Sounds like your experiences with it are rather like mine.)

That being the case, by all means go ahead and get a P67/2600k/Corsair Vengeance setup. I'd go for 8GB for now though tbh, 16 seems like a bit of a waste. You could even spend the change on a cheap SSD!

has all the beefy power distribution features of the AsRock Extreme6 without the blocked PCI-E X1 slot...

and best of all, no crappy old PCI slots!

i'm currently sitting on my cash hand to prevent myself from wasting money on anything until the intel socket 2011 motherboards start ariving later this year... hopefully well before christmas....

Course my i7 solution is still damn fast yet... But damn those Sandybridge rev3.0 are guaddamn fast.

well i got a bit of show and tell i want to do....

my RAM came in the mail already!

i also completed my watercooling loop, the thing im most proud of with it is that i managed to mount all the components to the removable motherboard tray so i now have no problems sliding the whole setup in and out.

the one thing that ruins the look and feel of the setup it is that nasty chipping of the paint on the rad.... i almost want to just buy a new one because of it....
