Rugged mouse

Father's day is coming up and one of the things that has come to mind is a replacement mouse. He's got a Razer mouse at the moment that has been used for about a year and a half and, as he's quite heavy-handed with clicks, has got to a point where it often double-clicks instead of single-clicking. I can't remember the model but it's one of the entry-level gaming mice.

Anyway, here's where I need help. The mouse will have to be pretty sturdy and (at least) the buttons have to be a decent size; my dad has huge hands. It also needs to be ambidextrous as he likes to switch hands. He's not ambidextrous but has been working on improving his left hand with a mouse to avoid wrist cramps and also just for comfort.
DPI is negligible - 3200 has been doing fine and he's not one for excessively high speeds.
Hand style is adaptable. He's used a few different mice and doesn't seem to have a particular grip. As long as he can play the games he wants to play he's really not bothered.
If the mouse has to have more than 3 buttons, turning them off would be good. They're not needed and won't be used if there. Maybe back and forward but that's it.

Re: Rugged mouse

A mouse good for huge hands is Microsoft's Sidewinder Mouse. The first one. Top DPI 2000. I don't like it due to its shape, but some people seem to love it. You should be able to find one now very cheap.

There are also the WoW mice by Steelseries which are pretty big, but they have a ton of buttons on them.

Re: Rugged mouse

"Sidewinder" is the name that Microsoft gave to all of its gaming peripherals. Is this the one you mean?

I know very well that MS names Sidewinder their gaming products. It's not my fault they named their first such mouse as just MS Sidewinder mouse. The "2000" was added after they released more models. The name of the mouse is the MS Sidewinder Mouse. The others have X3, Xwhatever codes.

So, if this 2000 is indeed just a renamed mouse, because it looks like it, then yes, this is the one I am talking about.
For its price, it's good. I wouldn't buy it again cause I find it tiring, but if your father has huge hands, then perhaps he won't have an issue with it.

I think the Steelseries WOW mice are larger, just not with such a big arc, if you want even larger. But, at least 3 times the price IIRC.

Good luck.

If you google "microsoft sidewinder mouse" then the first results are of the mouse I am talking about. Including the images.

That involves lots of money and changing batteries, the latter he wouldn't want to do to play games.
The RAT 7 I wouldn't go for because of the price and it has issues that the RAT 9 addressed. Also, it's far too complex for what he needs; 3 buttons.

The Sidewinder looks like a reasonable choice. What about the Kone+, CM Sentinel Advance and Kova+ - are they durable mice (or mouses)?

Re: Rugged mouse

I have (used to since I can't find it) the CM Sentinel Advance. It's big alright, but it felt too flimsy. I posted my experience with it here if you can find it, I don't remember the title of the thread. If you can find it cheaper than the MS, get it. I have no experience with the other.

Re: Rugged mouse

I had a look at some of the reviews for the Sidewinder and it seems adequate for my dad. I've also had people vouch for Microsoft mice lasting well so it looks like that's a winner
